Subject: 24 Hours of LeMons?

As some of you may have heard, my family ran the 24 Hours of LeMons a
couple years ago.  It was a blast and we all loved it but sometimes real
life gets in the way of the fun stuff and it looks like we won't be able to
make another team again.  So, I may be looking at buying the car and safety
equipment from my dad to create a LVL1 team and would like to know who
would be interested.

The 24 Hours of LeMons is endurance racing for idiots.  This is a 24 hour
race (sometimes 24 hours straight, sometimes two 12 hour sessions) for cars
worth less than $500.  Teams are made of 4-6 drivers and the winner gets
$1,000 in nickels.  If you've ever wanted to race head to head on a track
in real cars there is no cheaper way to do so.

Another thing to keep in mind is this is the same racing series that
accepts autonomous vehicles.  So if we're feeling really ambitious we could
rig up an old beater to drive autonomously and race it against real cars
and drivers which would be pretty epic.

I'll post a better pic of the car later, right now this is the only one I
have (we're the one in the very background).

Please try to come to tonights meeting if you're interested!

That sounds right up my alley...  As soon as I know something more firm on
my scheduling I'll let you know what I can contribute.

I'll try to be there tonight but there may be a social engagement I must
attend.

I just took delivery of a new car, so I may have a car to offer for cheap.
I'm also game to help where I can, especially if going the autonomous
route.

I'm a decent driver and I have a ton of experience keeping cheap old cars
going for just awhile longer...

Someone once asked me how I learned so much about how cars work and how to
fix them and how they could learn it too; I told them it was simple - just
sell that nice reliable car he had, buy one for $1,000-$1,500 and depend on
it to get to work.  Also: buy $70 worth of random tools and use them
however you can when the time comes.  LOL  Well, it worked for me.

Must be an OLD car....
If it is a late model car, you'll need a degree in Computer Science...

I can't make tonight's meeting, but I'd be in. I'm a good driver, I've
driven and instructed at road course open track events and won my
class for 3 years in the local SCCA autocross back in 2000-2002 (C
Prepared, then Street Modified twice).  I'm organizing the road course
and autocross at an event in Memphis on May 18th & 19th if anyone
wants some practice time and instructors will be available if you want
to learn.

Ok, now for the serious part.  There is a race June 9th-10th in Illinois
that we are already signed up for.  It's really super short notice, but the
car is done and already runs so most of the work is done.  If we are going
to do this race we'll need 4 drivers willing to pony up $600 each for
entrance fees, gas, safety equipment and minor upgrades for the car.  We
will also need some extra people to haul up tools, camp out with us and
help out in the pits.

I will probably call this one Thursday to decide if we go or not so let me
know asap.  Either way, I still plan on running a LVL1 team on October
13-14th 2012 in the same location.  I'm working on getting the car a home
and tow vehicle near LVL1 so anyone can hack on it to their hearts content.

As far as being a driver, I am out. (sleeping in the yard for the next few
years doesn't appeal to me). Where in IL is it?
