LVL1ers,

For every year of our existence, we've had a great history of getting shirts made before Makerfaire.  The faire is rapidly approaching, and we need new designs QUICK if we have any hope of getting them in by the faire!

If you have any artistic talent at all, you should submit a shirt design.  It should make it clear that we're from LVL1, and the design should be easily seen on many different colors.  Otherwise, anything goes!  Submit your designs in this thread, I'll put up a poll, and we'll figure out what shirt we'll buy.

If we don't have a winning design in two weeks, we won't have new shirts for the faire, so get sketching!  I'll even up the ante this year: If your design is selected, I'll buy you two LVL1 shirts, whatever color you want.

I am all for t-shirts and I will get one when that time happens.  There was also some talk about getting some customized lab coats. It looks like you can get lab coats pretty cheaply online with custom embroidery.  We can further customize these labcoats using heat transfer vinyl http://www.uscutter.com/Heat-Transfer-Vinyl on our vinyl cutter.  I can borrow a clamshell heat press to press the vinyl on the lab coats.

There's also this which was commissioned by Jose. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lvl1/8796349226/

It depicts Butterscotch driving Steve toward a moat whole roasting a peep, firing the Muff Cannon, and towing a White Star Balloon (I believe she's also texting) as debris from mind over melon rains down.

I can update any text/graphics on here, so if we think something else would fit better (flammable/oxidizing) I can make that happen.

Great designs everyone!  Keep 'em coming, and I'll put up a poll very soon!

Scott, I like the logo, but you might want to keep the "Maker Faire" off of it.  These shirts aren't just fashionable during Makerfaire season! (And Make Media is super protective of their brand).

Because LVL1 serves as a catalyst to get people going, perhaps the oxidizer symbol would be appropriate?

Course, explodey bits are always nice J

Keep the submissions coming! We need to choose a design pretty quickly, or no way we'll get shirts by the end of July!

Also, that design I submitted was drawn from a photo I took of the first IC I found lying around. I used to be a graphic designer and digital illustrator. I used to do lots of pre-flight proofing and have been doing this long enough to remember having to submit film for magazine ads.

If you have an idea that you'd like me to make, send it my way. If I have a reference photo or sketch with the correct proportions and perspective (I suck at freehand), I can draw it and make it work as a 1 or 2 color shirt.

I'm sure many of us have similar abilities, if we have freehand folks that work with pencil/pen and paper we can work together on it. So in addition to designs, submit some ideas. Let's have cool shirts!

Joseph

Also, having worked designed logos, interfaces and such for engineers, I think sometimes (not always) engineers tend to not get "less is more" in aesthetic design. I think they approach "less is more" as efficiency which isn't the same thing when it comes to aesthetics. So think about just some text <20 characters or just an icon with no text at all. Something iconic.

The Science Center's shirts that just say "Do science." on the front get a lot of attention. Since we're apparently the "rainbow hackerspace" consider that the KSC shirts have in the past been: tangerine with cyan ink, purple with fluorescent green ink, bright green with fluorescent pink ink. We can get really obnoxious with colors this way and still keep the cost low.

What about just something like "Make stuff." on the front in one color with LVL1 logos and text on the back.  What would they say?

Joseph

One more thing, I already have a ridiculous lab coat. How about a ridiculous orange flight suit with heat transfer/screen printed graphics. C'mon, ORANGE FLIGHT SUITS!

OK, Here's some ideas...

Some play on the "Keep Calm and Carry On" posters

Some wording made from smaller objects. "Make Stuff" or "LVL1" made from circuitry, transistors, tools, etc.

Thought this design was pleasing to the eye:

I can tackle that, just not tonight. What about that on the back of the "Probably safe." front design. To the back "x + y = LVL1" thing, we just add the url and/or "Louisville, KY" or whatever.

I love "Probably safe." Not sure who came up with that phrase or if it's original or what, but I love it. If it's original, it should be the official motto.

One other thing, for some reason, I have several close friends in Louisville have some kind of screen printing business:

Will @ WHY Louisville - http://whylouisville.com
Priscilla @ Kopilot - http://kopilotpress.com
Hillary & Dan @ Kinship - http://www.kinshipgoods.com
several folks @ Monkey Drive - http://www.monkeydrive.net

I'm willing to try to work out a good rate from this pool of people. I think LVL1 already has a screen printing hook up though.

Brad, or whomever, I'm also willing to coordinate the tshirt ordering if you or nobody else has time. Let me know.

Joseph

Joseph man, where's your hackerspace pride? How are folks going to know that LVL1 is the "probably safe usually" hackerspace?

Alternate phrase.

Newest Revision to T-Shirt Logo

Motto:

Probably Safe, Usually.
LVL1.org
Louisville, KY

This image for the T-Shirt is unique to LVL1.  The logo choice should not be something that can be reused by replacing LVL1 with any other hackerspace name.  Each line is a signature LVL1 project and provides an opportunity to explain what it means.  If selected I will make a Wiki page with the logo that links to the projects in the image.

Time to schedule a logo vote.

I know submissions are closed, but I'll throw in my design from last year in case anyone wants to incorporate it or the idea into an actual T-shirt.
