Subject: Dinner Tuesday 11-13-12

So for dinner tomorrow I'm contemplating perhaps some French Toast or maybe
some fried rice.  Or any other reasonable suggestion.  I think Tim once
suggested a goulash. That looks promising as well.  Do you have a favorite
recipe Tim?

Frankly I can't decide what I want to eat *tonight* so what I feel like
making tomorrow is a mystery.  Feel free to vote for your favorite or
submit an idea of your own.

As a reminder this is the last dinner I'm funding "out of pocket" and
future dinners will depend on your kind donations.  If I get only $15 the
next meal will be sandwiches.  If I get $50 it'll be something nice and hot
and tasty.  If I get nothing, well, you know the drill.  I'll carry a
balance forward and start doing public tracking of funds and such, too.

I think this post is a little confusing and insinuates you'd rather have
cash than people bring in dishes.

Good point Divinity; still looking more for participation than cash - but
also switching the Main Course from "me paying for it" to "crowd-funded" --
so whomever makes it (doesn't have to be me) can use the funds to offset
the outlay.  It can be expensive to feed so many people and so it's harder
to get someone to chip in so much food.  Hopefully this will help people
feel more comfortable as they won't have to pay so much (or perhaps
anything) out of pocket.

My wife makes guloush (sp?) all the time.  I'm sure there are tons of
recipies but hers is pretty simple:

You basically mix up a lb of cooked hamburger, a lb of cooked penne pasta,
a can of chopped tomatoes and a can of tomato sauce.  I add onion salt,
salt and pepper when I make it.  Let it sit together for about 20 min and
its ready to eat.

Hmm, sounds like something I already make, I add corn to it for color and
flavor.

Tim's offered to bring some bacon or sausage so I'm gonna go with French
Toast for tonight.  Pretty cheap and pretty easy.  If anyone else wants to
bring something in to add to this please feel free to say so.

Naturally non-breakfast foods are more than welcome as well; food is good!

Does anyone know if we have any syrup or powdered sugar at the space?  I
recall seeing some syrup previously but I don't recall seeing any powdered
sugar.

While I *normally* use farm-fresh free-range organic eggs from my parent's
chickens I'm currently out of those and will have to pick some eggs up at
the store later tonight; I know some people take the ethics into account so
I wanted to post a heads up.  I'll also be using cinnamon, nutmeg, and a
touch of vanilla in the batter -- so if you're allergic to any of these let
me know and I'll make you a plain one before I mix the stuff you're
allergic to in.  If no one chimes in on this I'll assume no one has any
problems and just mix it up.

It's a type of pasta dish that is very versatile (I googled for it myself)
and can be quite tasty.

We're on like Donkey Kong for the French Toast.  :-D

I keep confusing Goulash with Stroganoff.... So I looked em up.

Goulash is normally based on tomatoes for the sauce
Stroganoffs are based more on roué based gravy for the sauce

Both begin with the same basics... Meat (ground beef), Aromatics (Onion/Garlic/Peppers), and Pasta (Penne, elbow, Egg noodles)

That's a very interesting looking recipe Marc!  I will probably use that
one soon...

Robert reminds me of something I'd forgotten because I'd failed to write
anything down and my memory sucks (this is why I'm getting the food thing
more organized in its own group!).  He's bringing soup!

So Tim; should we re-jigger our plans to better suit his soup or press on
with French Toast?  I can do it later instead and bring in something to
support the soup...  Maybe some sourdough bread.

Charles is bringing some bread too.  I think sort of a french baguette.
Sourdough would be awesome too.  I will bring the soup in 2 pots, both of
which will arrive vegetarian friendly (It's a curried split pea soup with a
few lentils also), but if someone wants to bring some precooked ham chunks
to add to one of the pots they are welcome to.  I think there will be
plenty of soup, but I will not be offended either way if you still want to
make french toast also.  I can eat breakfast any time of day and in
combination with any other meal :)

It sounds like you have things well in hand!  I might bring a pasta side
dish this time...  Unless the French Toast thing gets a couple of votes and
I'll do it anyway.  Otherwise it may just be put off until next week.

Really I need to focus on getting the food stuff organized and then all
this will be easier.

What if you had a donation barrel of food items like they have at the
grocery store?  It might make for some interesting dishes as the "food
hackers" figure out how to make a meal out of the various items.  I have
several cans of Saeur Kraut juice I need to get rid of (j/k).

Just grab a random can of corn, or package of pasta and throw it in.
Someone would need to set up the barrel thing though.  Unfortunately I'm
out of town for much of remaining '12.
