Depending on how expensive bulbs are it might be worth getting an LED
projector.  They cost around $400-$600 and the bulbs last the life of the
projector.  Personally I'd rather buy a new one that will last us a lot
longer than spend $200 on a new bulb.

I sent Mark an email about purchasing a new bulb earlier today... but
I don't think he's acted yet.

If you have a recommended LED projector, put it up for a FAP. This is
why we have the process, and I imagine it'll have broad support.

I agree with Aaron. We are better off getting a new projector. The one in
the main room is not a loaner, it was donated. It is at least 5 years old.

The one on the ceiling is not a loaner.  I either gave it to the space, or
was reimbursed... that was so long ago.  I bought it for $100 or $200???.
Don't know what the cost of a bulb is.  I wonder if we could hack a high
power LED to make it shine again.

Oh and I would vote +1 to buy a new projector.  The one we have is not
great and it is used quite a bit.

I did some quick research and LED projectors don't appear to be suited for
our usage.  Specifically, partially lighted rooms and reading text
(meetings and such).  These are conference room type devices which
require light control (small area, all switchable lights).  Remember how we
use the device is paramount instead of the latest tech fad.

I've seen these in use and I think it'll work fine.  They are comparable to
our current projector and I think the ability to leave it running all the
time (which we tend to do) without worrying about power usage or burning
out the bulb is more important than having the perfect image.  I'll see if
I can borrow one and try it out at our meeting tonight.

If we decide to replace the current projector, I will go ahead and submit a +1 right now ☺
All I ask is that:

1.       The new projector should be able to “Overcome” the issue of projecting a visible image with lights on (Much high lumens)

2.       It has a resolution that’s in-line with at least last-gen displays (in other words, at least 1024x768 (1280x1024 would be better…))

The above 2 “upgrades” might actually make “Movie-night” enjoyable.

(Just my 2 cents…not an expert… Your mileage may vary… all rights reserved… all lefts reserved too…

I think a DIY projector would be awesome, but in the interest of time we
should just get something that works first.  If you would like to upgrade
with a DIY later, that's definitely an option we can explore.

I'll be bringing this by tonight to test:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824116516
This one has lots of bells and whistles so it's $700, if it works out we
can look into some cheaper, similar ones with similar output.

something that would help any projector would be a screen that isn't
translucent, makes the image wash out.

Got a bulb for $85 on Amazon, reimbursed per LVL1 bylaws.  If we end up
FAPing for a new projector, hey, two projectors.

Projector will be up and running by Friday.

Well, the bulb is either DOA, or the projector has more serious troubles.

The error light blinks twice, indicating lamp failure (same error as before
the new bulb).  Fans spin up, but no light.  I'll leave the projector as-is
for the weekend, and start the RMA process Monday unless anyone can figure
it out.

Make sure the cover is on secure.  Some have a sensor.

It does have a sensor.  When the cover isn't secure, the fans do not turn
on, and the projector doesn't beep.

You might need to reset the lamp hour timer. How to do that should be a
Google search away.

Yes, you need to reset the timer.  You do that through the on-screen menu,
which is difficult to get to when the bulb won't turn on.

Unless the instructions which guide you through the menu intend for you to
cross-reference the menu tree in the back of the guide in order to reset
the timer blind.  If anyone wants to attempt this fool's errand, feel free.

We carefully followed the instructions located in the manual here:
