Too many Pleats ???

Overheard a bit of grumbling about the amount of fabric in a Kilt……

 

Kilts were originally worn by Celts in battle served two purposes - first, the plaids identified who was on your side in the fight, as battles were often fought based on alignment by kinsmanship.

Secondly, if you were killed in battle, the kilt formed a burial shroud for your body. The waist band was cut off, the pleats opened up,

and the remaining fabric was enough to wrap the dead body in, so your family could find and claim your body on the battle field.

 

This is why all that material is in them, requiring them to be so heavily pleated…
