Subject: High-Current Switch Needed

The power wheels team is trying to come up with a way to deal with motor
direction control, so we will have the ability to reverse. We could really
use some kind of DPDT contactor that can switch at least 50A. Let me know
if anyone has anything lying around.

-Paul.

Dpdt contractors aren't really made. You would need two purpose built contactor with a mechanical linkinge between the two. A reversing contactor.

AC or DC motor? Modern contactors are usually rated for AC, they don't rate 'em for dc because of the huge inrush of current of you are trying to get a capacitive/inductive loads going from zero.

I have 40amp with 24vdc coil and 2 no and 2 nc aux contacts. I should have two more of 'em coming in next week. Altech mc40 if curious. I don't have the reversing bar for them, but you could use the aux contacts to energize the second coil. This won't be certifiable but it would work. Though they are about 10 amps lower then what you need.

I'm working on building an extremely high current motor controller, but to simplify the process, we're making the field winding reversible through a polarity change. The switch needs to be able to reverse the polarity of the field winding.

Something like this may work:

No need for any interlock circuit.
