So I think I am retiring from the social innovation business less Chris taps me on a mad project inspiring under-served populations. Until then I thought it would be more fun to work on something that is actually fun to research. Nothing like breaking records..

I found one that is literally stealing candy from a baby... I need to go pick up a record book and see if I can find something a little bit more flashy but its a start for the Record breaking meeting.

No idea. I am buying a copy of guiness book of world records. The only 2013 version I can find is in the reference section of the U of L library.. Can't check it out and research in my downtime.

I can get 3000 ft for 40 bucks.. I'll call my friend who manages restaurants and see what a case would cost.

I know a guy who set the current record for duration of hula hooping, he almost died.  I mostly want to remain comfortable. This is my goal at any given time.

OK, so is there any reason it has to be new plastic (other than it's easier, as you could just build a jig to make the ball using rollers and a spinner)? Why not see if the city will help us get w/ JCPS (largest feeder of people in the city, so prolly using a lot of plastic wrap; maybe I'm wrong?) and see how much of this stuff they use daily. Maybe we can just have them chuck it all in a bin for us to collect? That way, you can promote this as a green "It'll be recycled afterwards" if you want, and shows city involvement, and then the city could get involved in the promoting the record thing. That gets more coverage for you and LVL1 and the city, everyone wins. Lots more effort, don't get me wrong, so maybe impractical but thought I'd ask.

Dine Company (restaurant supplier) here in town has 18" x 2000 foot rolls for 22.89.

I told them what I was doing and asked if we could get a bulk discount and possibly even get it at cost in exchange for mentioning them if and when we get any publicity because of it.

I spoke to Sherry and she said she was going to call the manufacturer to find out about any wider x longer spools they may have.

Once she gets that information, she needs to know how MUCH we need.

Does anyone have any idea of how much we'll need?

First we need to figure out how much we will need. Then we can start estimating cost?

Anyone good at math?

I like this idea Sean; we can also use it to promote recycling programs.  Most people have no idea how much waste is produced daily.  The trouble will be washing it all to prevent spoiled food remainders on the cling from causing us olfactory and health issues.

Record ball is 281.5 pounds. I looked at some and the 3000' 18" spools looked like ~10 pounds and ~$34 on Amazon 1 box at a time (shipped). If 10 pounds is the low end (due to box/core), call it 30 spools or $1000 of product just to edge past.

That said, Berry Plastics makes cling film and they're nearby in Evansville :) Maybe factory direct is the way to go!

Now, any reason it has to be *food wrap film*, and not stretch wrap like palletizing material? It says "Cling Film/Plastic Wrap" which may include something like machine-deployable shrink film. If so, a single 70" x 6000' roll of the stuff is easily 125 pounds, and since there're lots of palletizing places in town maybe we could get a few hours on one of their machines and blammo, new record. That record ball is 138" diameter; I bet a machine that can deploy the 70" wide strips and articulates could throw down 4 rolls and be double the existing record :D

Or is there anything else we could make that would qualify like the largest Eiffel tower made out of shipping peanuts or biggest chainmail shirt made out of coke can tabs.  Lets be creative here....

Quick, someone go grab a roll of saran wrap, pull it off the roller, wad it up, and weigh it…

Then it will become simple grade school math

Good Point.

I remember watching the palletizing machine at the company who sponsored my battlebot… Their machine could spin a pallet full of metal parts and wrap it in a tight cocoon in like 30 seconds

I imagine it might be a chore to get a ball started (Not exactly a pallet, and how do you “fix it in place” so it can be spun?) But once you did, you could spin a ball in a jiffy…

I am purchasing a copy of the record book. I am going to try and read it and figure the things that would be deemed comfortable. Meeting is after operations meeting. Putting it on calender now.

I'm thinking of email Johnson a Mills the maker of Saran wrap and see if they would just donate a ton depending on if this is a competition we want to compete in.

I think the game plan I'm developing is to get in better with the browns by getting them in the Guinness book. Any idea's? Jack Daniels already has the largest whiskey bottle and another manufacturer already has the largest bottle mosaic.

Here you go. This one was just set (well past the old record) and yet still seems super easy to break. Not like finding a single amusement park ride to rent would be that hard, for an off-season carny. Ferris wheels are nice and slow, so they're an obvious choice. I've stayed awake 7 days before, so it's fairly trivial for someone to break 48 hours as a record if you're allowed to be active. Live stream it, and use Ben's google glasses while doing it :) Raise money for charity, yadayada.

Doesn't Kentucky kingdom have one?
If they did , they are trying to open next year and would need to test it out once the safety check it, I'm sure they would like the publicity it would generate for them. Maybe go for the largest group to ride it for 24 hours  nonstop.

Hey I'll willingly contact the fair control board and see what they say. Never hurt to ask long as people want to do it. Unless they have WIFI and I can do calculus while revolving I can't promise I can compete in this one. Let me know if I should follow up on this one.
