OK, while not as cool as Steve's, my rocket and camera only cost a tenth
what his did.

Nice video, but Silverado and not Big Country?

I am saving the Big Country for just the right video. It has to be a
special one.

What about a new contest being a scale micro maxx wall. 528 feet.

Hi Charlie,

I don' t think I can get it that high. With 4 stages, I only made it to about 150 feet. With the 3 engine cluster and the altimeter, it only made it to 34 feet.

How about a 52.8 foot wall.

Maybe if I used a 12 Gauge shotgun as a tube launcher.

I bet you could make a piston type launcher for it. I'd further bet Bob Parks and Ryan would like that challenge. The trick would be in the materials. Wonder if you could use a soda straw (and replace each launch)?

Actually, it would need to be staged clusters to get enough thrust to
lift the altimeter.

I might be able to get the "Big Hunking Rocket" to 500 feet with some
sort of a cannon, but 1, how would you know how high it went, 2, how
would you get it back.

I like the idea of a piston launcher made out of a straw. I will have to
try that.

A 2048 cluster of 1/8 As. That would be cool.

528 feet on a single micromaxx is going to be very tough without extra
propulsion....

Bob Parks actually has a prototype Micromaxx piston built, but we've
never tested it that I recall.

I used a piston for a micromaxx streamer entry at one of the competitions last year.  Worked great, though it didn't get 528'.

How about 528"?  with an altimeter, that's plenty challenging, though the altimeters might not have enough resolution.

I was going to make a snippy remark about fractional feet, but that turns out to be a nice round 44’. Possibilities here. According to John Bean his altimeters have a resolution of 1 foot (not necessarily accurate, but they will show the difference).

The altimeters nowadays have more than enough resolution and accuracy
at that altitude. By accuracy, I mean that the sensors (the expensive
ones at least) can reliably discriminate 0.4 feet of pressure
(including noise).

But...Then we fling that sensor into the wind 528' feet off the ground
into swirling pressure gradients and ask it, "Hey, what's the pressure
up here?"

It's just a limitation of using pressure to gauge altitude that you
could fling two of them out and have them disagree by three feet and
both be right. Three feet of pressure is not much, and are the kinds
of gradients that simple movements create.
