Hello Everyone!!!

LumiNotes has been an invaluable find to my ever lasting wises for a
perfect Wiki / Notes system for a Personal use. I loved the project
very much.

But I came to know that the project has been shutdown recently and
there is no changes happening to it. Heartbroken, I've contacted the
original creator Dan Helfman and he confirmed that the project has
been shutdown and he won't be working on it anymore. But he encouraged
me to work on it if needed and notify the same in this group so
everyone is aware of my efforts to revive this excellent project.

So, here it goes. I've forked a public version of the Code so far
available under http://luminotes.com/hg/luminotes into my own new
repository hosted with BitBucket (with my Custom Domain so don't get
confused about the URL here).

You can find the new Repository at: http://code.asrinivasan.com/sri-luminotes

I've also implemented a Project Management site for LumiNotes here:
http://projects.asrinivasan.com/projects/sri-luminotes

Please make use both of the URLs to stay in touch with active
development on LumiNotes. Anyone having a good knowledge in Python can
also help me to revive the project by joining to Code.

Please let me know your comments and suggestions. You all can make
suggestions for new features or optimizing existing features as well
as any issues you're facing with LumiNotes in the BitBucket site so
that I'll take it for development consideration.

Thanks...

Great news. Thank-you for doing this.

Which areas of Luminotes do you plan on developing?

Cheers,

O

Hi Oliver,

I'm yet to decide on the feature set. That's why I need you guys to give me
suggestions.

I'm also planning to fix issues that were left in LumiNotes as of last
release.

Hi Srinivasan,

Thank-you for your efforts. Here is a suggestion that is the result of
personal experience:

*Make Luminotes easier to install on common servers.*

When I tried to install Luminotes I couldn't find several of the
packages that it depends on. Frustrated, I gave up and used the
desktop version. I know there are others on this group who are in the
same situation.

Having the software easily installable would benefit everybody since a
wider user-base will always result in more feedback, more patches and
a more active community.

So, clarifying what the dependencies are, where to get them, and how
to install them (if it's not obvious) on a typical server (such as
Ubuntu 10.x for example) would be a great start!

Let me know what you think.

Regards,

O

Thank you, Srinivasan.

Luminotes is a fine product and very much worth the effort.

Good luck!

Hi Oliver,

That's an excellent suggestion. I too had the same problem when I
tried to locally compile and install Luminotes. I've got so frustrated
finding the right packages and still it won't compile very much. I've ended
up building it for the Desktop installer and that was so much better. I was
also using Desktop version from this installer I made.

Now that I've planned to work on Luminotes, I've dismantled the
entire project to see the dependencies and my first plan was to upgrade
current code to use latest packages that come along with Python 2.7. But
before that, as you've specified, I will make a installation guide and will
even release the Desktop Installer I made (I don't think there's a Desktop
installer available now sine the site is now showing only discontinued
message).

Thanks for the suggestions. Please do keep them coming... ;)

With Love,

Srinivasan Annamalai

Hi Srinivasan,

I think the desktop installer is still available through a blogger.
Have a look at the very first message in this Group. It's what I used
and it seemed to work fine.

I'm very grateful that you are tackling the dependencies problem! Let
us know how it's going.
