----- 1. Civitan is again planning an inclusive activity with the Village Players Get your tickets now for another inclusive entertainment event with the Village Players. Following on the heels of a very successful inclusive evening with the Village Players last year, Maumee Valley Civitan is again "buying out the house" for another entertaining event. Civitan will be giving 100 tickets to the mr/dd community for the performance on Sunday afternoon, May 18, of "Don't Dress for Dinner," a play described as "a recipe for hilarious confusion with more twists than a corkscrew!" The performance will be at the Village Players Theater on Upton Avenue. To make this a truly inclusive community event, Civitan will sell the remaining seats for $18 each. Everyone attending is invited to a reception preceding the show. To purchase tickets send an e-mail to maumeevalleycivitan@gmail.com or call Mary Pat Riker at 419-380-4049. To see photos from last year's event, visit maumeevalleycivitan.org Sponsors for this event include NBC24, Kroger, TRIAD and Maumee Valley Civitan. ---- 2. Superintendent Trunk's next forum is May 13 Superintendent John Trunk's next monthly forum will be Tuesday, May 13, 9:30 a.m., at the Board's Administration Building, 1154 Larc Lane. John will update us on the status of the levy campaign ─ the financial need; Commissioners’ Citizens Review Committee; Timelines; Preliminary strategy; and the Campaign Committee organizational chart. These open forums follow a friendly conversational format and are designed to update families, providers and advocates of issues being addressed by the Board of MR/DD. The Superintendent's forum will be followed by a meeting of the Lott Parent Group at 11:30 a.m. in the Great Room at Larc Lane Center, 1155 Larc Lane. Lunch provided. This is the last meeting until September 9th. ----- 3. Sunshine Acres Plant Sale The first annual Sunshine Acres Plant Sale will be May 20. See the attached flyer. ----- 4. Next state Family Council meeting will be June 10 From Peggy Martin, Family Advocate at the Ohio Department of MR/DD: "Well I listened to your requests and we have a GREAT agenda for our June 10th meeting as a result. "Last meeting those of you that attended shared your frustrations with the delivery of services as they are designed. Although our presenters did an excellent job outlining how the Individual Service Plan process is to work you wanted administrators to hear from you that sometimes it doesn't work as presented. We welcome policy makers to our meetings as you being the "customers" are the voice that we want to hear from. Therefore, we put together an agenda where we have invited key folks to hear your stories. This is NOT to be a "complaint" session but a working session to help Ohio's delivery system meet the needs of our individuals and their families. I would very much appreciate it if you all would think about what you would want to share and have people hear and email it to me. Your story needs to be highlighted and to organize this meeting I will ask those of you whose story I believe will most reflect what we want to accomplish to be part of a panel. I am also happy to announce that Cheryl Phipps, Superintendent of Hamilton County will be presenting on the role of a Superintendent and how the role should be about people we serve. "Director Martin will also present on the "implementation" of the Futures Committee recommendations. Since the work of the recommendations has been completed many of you have asked how they will be implemented. This is the next phase and he will share that with you. "Mark your calendars for June 10 at CDC training room, 1601 W. Broad Street in Columbus. 10a.m.-3:00 (we will begin PROMPTLY). Please RSVP to Michele Kanode at Michele.kandode@dmr.state.oh.us or call 614-644-0265. "Please submit your story by May 20th!!" ----- 5. Lucas
County Probate Judge Jack Puffenberger administers the Oath of Office to
Dr. William Wolfe, who becomes the newest member of the Lucas County
Board of MR/DD. Dr. Wolfe is a former Assistant Professor in the U.T.
College of Education. He has also served on the boards of Project
SEARCH, Project SCOUT, and the Ability Center of Greater Toledo. He is
the parent of an adult daughter with developmental disabilities. Dr.
Wolfe fills the seat left empty with the recent resignation of Mark
Jacoby.
Self-advocates
from Lucas County pose with John Martin, Director of the Ohio Department
of MR/DD, at a rally in the Statehouse to mark the kick-off for Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities
(MRDD) Awareness Month. “When Doors Open, We Succeed,” the statewide theme for this
year’s MRDD Awareness Month activities, encourages
people to welcome individuals with disabilities as equal partners in
their communities.
Many
people might say that Kelly and Mark Stephenson are defying the odds.
But this happy couple is proud to show off their impeccable home, talk
about success on their jobs, and discuss their hobbies and volunteer
work at their church. Kelly and Mark have been married for two years.
Mark has been employed at the Reynolds Road Animal Clinic for 11 years.
Kelly, for the past two years, has been part of the Lott Industries
enclave and Calphalon. Service and Support Specialist Pamela Snyder says
Mark and Kelly utilize natural supports for some things, but for the
most part, they are living independently. Theirs is a story of dreams,
commitment, love, a supporting family infrastructure, and an inclusive
community. Our best wishes and hearty congratulations to Kelly and Mark
Stephenson, the 2007 Self-Advocates of the Year.
