Hi all,
Wishing you all a good 2012.I thought I would share some experience I had with my modified 1985 110 V8 on a recent trip to the Vic falls, pans,Kasane,Chobe and the Delta. As was expected this time of the year the roads were very wet and many kms of mud and water was experienced. I went on the trip with 2 mates who had td5’s and the water didn’t cause much of a problem on these crossings. My vehicle which has a 3.9v8i with spitronics suffered in deep water if I went in at any speed with the motor getting wet. I used q20 but this didn’t seem to help the situation much. After a few times of cracking the starter, the engine would fire up as normal. I then tried a technique of putting the vehicle in low range so that the revs would be higher and made many crossings without problems. I put it down to either the distributor was “making the water less likely to stick at these higher revs” or maybe my crank sensor doesn’t like being wet. I would like to know if a crank sensor can work under water? If not my next project will be to put it higher up on the crank pulley. The 110 otherwise behaved very well during the 3800km which I thought was a good testament to a 27yr old vehicle which has been to hell and back during its life. I still have to work on the fuel consumption when driving slowly game viewing or in low range but on the open road I got 17 which is not bad for a fully loaded vehicle with steel roof rack and rooftop tent. My steering became problematic three quarter way through the trip and felt like the power steering was giving up. When I got back home I found the problem to be a semi seized steering knuckle, which with a bit of rust releasing fluid started behaving again. I was ready to replace the power steering pump but luckily this came to light before I did the latter. An amazing trip with great company.
Regards,
Bernard
