Dufty stumps heavily for Trader Joe's at the Tower Records building.  Watch for big contributions to the "Dufty for Mayor" campaign (am I too cynical?)
At the DTNA meeting, there was little opposition, mostly from local small businesses with lots to lose (Harvest Market, Rosenbergs).
While I don't think TJs is the ideal tenant for that site, and I do think it will cause traffic nightmares on Noe, and make the Noe/Market/16th intersection more dangerous, as well as blocking either the bike or traffic lanes on Market (truck loading zone).
But I'll probably shop there sometimes, so I guess it would be hypocritical to raise a big stink.
Does the Castro really need saving?  By Trader Joe?

Thanks very much for joining our mailing list. Here are a couple of current items:

(1) If you are a Castro/Upper Market merchant or know one well enough to suggest this, please help with these two things at:
http://savethecastro.com/neighborhood-merchants.html

* high traffic windows for placards

* merchant statements to add to the website

(2) If you care to read Bevan Dufty’s article about Trader Joe's in the current issue of Gloss Magazine:

Thanks very much for your support!

I'm not a Trader Joe's regular, and I do foresee a parking mess if they were to get into that space, but I find myself for this. I just hate to see that Tower Records space empty and TJ's seems like a business with relatively good intentions and products.

Where would all the cars go, though? In that roof garage? If I remember correctly, that garage isn't too huge. TJs with the Wednesday Farmer's Market would be a sight to see.

As an aside, does anyone ever turn onto Noe from 16th? I do often, and that traffic light facing 16th really is ambiguous and confusing. Maybe TJ's can pay to have that thing tilted over to the proper position.

Thanks for listening

I've got nothing to add about TJs, but what does the Lower Haight think about Whole Foods in the Ford/Enterprise location? I know HV and Duboce had informational meetings about them coming in, but I didn't get to either one. Anyone go?

I suggested a traffic study and mitigation fees at the meeting.  I don't know if they will follow up, and I don't have time to deal with it.  Dufty is so horny to get them in, he may not demand anything.  Check on the DTNA website for updates, and/or call Dufty's office.  If you live on the South side of Waller, you're probably in his district.
I believe he lives near Waller/Webster, but I've never seen him walking around in the LOHA.

I like everything about the project except for the Whole Foods! They do try
and do everything right, or so the say, and apparently treat their employees
well. They also still sell lots of non-local produce, like from Argentina,
and I don't need to gripe about the prices. And at the end of the day, the
profits go back to Texas into the pockets of an anti-health-care
libertarian.

Otherwise, it appears to be a rather nice-looking housing-over-retail
project. It has .75:1 unbundled (sold seperately) parking, which I feel is
still too high a ratio for a transit-rich area. .5:1 would be better, and
closer to the actual car ownership stats of the area.
I'd pee in my pants if they changed their minds and put in a Berkeley Bowl,
though.

I don't like the idea of a Whole Foods there either. We already have
Golden Produce and Golden Natural Foods, which is small family-owned
business. I'm fearful that theywould be hurt, and they are some very
hardworking people.
