Hmm, the past couple of days, I've had my doorbell rung, with no answer when I turn on the intercom to say "hello?", I wonder if this means the joint is being cased. i live between Steiner and Pierce on Page...

Maybe time for a camera on the house. That would worry me as well  I imagine they have gotten much cheaper lately.

Add our apartment on Laussat St to the list of burglaries. In this
case an epic failure on the part of the thief.

Got home yesterday, Friday, at 4:30PM to see my side passage door to
the street open and a 20-something year old walking in. Turned out to
be a undercover cop, investigating a report of a stranger in the back
yard that connects 3 or 4 buildings. My neighborhood had seen a young
man climbing around and when confronted, the young man had bolted;
hopping the high fence to Laussat St.

Went in my house to inspect, and sure enough, a window pane of our
French door to the deck had been broken. However, the door was still
locked and nothing was missing. A few months back, I changed the
deadbolt lock from an inside latch to a keyed lock on the inside and
outside. (We keep the key visible near the door, so it can be quickly
used to escape in case of fire). At the same time as replacing the
lock, I'd reinforced the floor and ceiling bots securing the center of
the French doors as well. So not only was the thief not able to unlock
the door after breaking the window; he couldn't simply break the door
open by force. Looks like these two upgrades prevented a home theft.

So it obvious that we are having a bunch of home burglaries. I'd take
some time to have a close look at your home, with an eye for how a
thief would try to make entry from anywhere other than the street; and
make the necessary upgrades where they make sense.

Good luck!

Just had a visit from an detective. Apparently the modus of this guy
was to pretend to pee while looking in the window facing the street;
to see what kind of items are showing: laptops, phones, etc. If
anything looked promising, they would come back.

Final note: Does anyone on Laussat St have a security camera facing
the street?

Thx, Daveed, for both safety tips and for details on how burglar
works. Do we have a description?

Actually, yet another update. They apprehended the suspects yesterday,
two guys in their late 20's, both known to police. . A detective came
by to corroborate some facts and dropped off a copy of the police
report. Its a great read. Here are the highlights:

One of the staff at Upper Playground at 220 Fillmore saw one of the
suspects hop the fence to our sideyard and let the other suspect in.
He called police and when the two suspects walked out again and headed
towards Steiner; he gave police a description.

There were at least 4 officers, two them plainclothes within 3 blocks
at the time; they were able to locate the suspects almost immediately.
When confronted, one complied, the other ran for it. A chase ensued,
including cops ramming a door open to gain access to a building, a run
through the fire escape and hopping a few fences. Suspect was
eventually caught in a backyard.

The witness did a cold show of the suspects and positively identified
both of them. Detective let me know, if it goes to trial; I'll most
likely be called to testify.

Hope this ends the recent run of breakins in the neighborhood.

I think they ended up in my back yard on Page.
Do you have the name of the detective?
