As usual, police blotter shows our neighborhood has much lower level of
criminal activity than the "other" Haight. Does anyone get the report from
Northern?

Safety during the Holiday Weekend

July 4th Weekend is Here!

Fireworks look pretty, but are illegal and often dangerous. Please enjoy
any 4th of July festivities in a safe area where there are managed firework
shows put on by the City and County of San Francisco - or explore nearby
cities in the Bay Area for equally fantastic firework displays. If you see
people lighting fireworks, please call the police immediately.

If you have plans to barbecue on the 4th of July, watch the grill at all
times. Supervise children around the barbecue. Keep an eye on your
children at all times, whether you are at the park, the beach, the pool, or
watching a fireworks show.

Safety Tips for Visitors and Tourists
Do you have friends coming in to the City for the July 4th Holiday? Even
in times of celebration and festivities, ensure your guests practice proper
safety techniques:
Do not leave valuables or anything visible inside your vehicle; always
keep doors and trunk locked.
Walk in well-lit and well-populated area, preferably with another
person; do not take short-cuts through dark alleyways.
Limit your valuables (ID and money) by carrying only what you need for
the day.
If taking public transportation, have your money or Fast Pass ready. Do
not fumble with your wallet; you might draw attention to a pickpocket.
Keep your cell phone charged; and in case of an emergency dial 9-1-1.

Are you going on Vacation? - Here are some reminders to help prevent your
home from being burglarized:
Keep all doors and windows locked.
Let a trusted neighbor know you will be out of town.
Stop mail and newspaper deliveries.
Keep a light on.
Enable your alarm if you have one.

occurred or any information that would assist in any investigation, you are

encouraged to call the Tip Line and leave the information for officers.

Reality is people are sometimes very apprehensive to come forward and

provide information. The Tip Line is a tool that you can use in order to

help the police and your community. If you would like to be contacted by an

officer please leave your contact information. If you prefer to remain

anonymous, just leave the information and we thank you for your help. The

Tip Line number is (415) 731-2865. Please remember if the crime is in

progress and/or an emergency call 911.

Bicycle Safety

With nice weather and summer around the corner, more people will be
enjoying the sun on their bicycles. Sometimes, the streets of San Francisco
are not pedestrian friendly and bike lanes do not always stop cars taking
more space than needed. Therefore, it is important to remember safety tips
when riding alone or with friends and family members. Being aware of your
surroundings will prevent injuries and supplement a nice ride! In order to
ensure safe riding, here are some helpful reminders:
Always wear a helmet even at the park (state law)
Always ride with traffic
Observe all signs, signals and basic right of way rules
Use hand signals when turning
Keep clear of the door zone (to avoid opening car doors)
Keep both hands ready to brake
Don't listen to music, or talk on a cell phone
At night, a white front light, red rear reflector, wheel and pedal
reflectors are required by law

Child Safety Tips from SF SAFE
Here are just a few tips for you and your kids:
Keep open communication with your children. Discuss all types of safety
with them.
Allow kids to tell you what makes them fearful, and encourage them to
communicate their feelings on being safe.
Teach them how to recognize potentially dangerous situations; whether
it's with someone they know, or someone they don't know.
Always play or travel with a friend.
Always tell an adult where you are going, even if it's just across the
street to a friend's house.
Sometimes it's okay to say "no" to an adult. Talk about the times when
they need to listen to adults and when it's appropriate to say "no".
Get to know your children's friends and families.
If a child is spending time at home alone, make rules for the house with
the child's help. Discuss the rules and the reasons for having each one
in place.
Talk about the difference between strangers and trusted adults with
children. Encourage them to share with you when they are uncomfortable
with the trusted adults.
Children need to know which adults they can go to in case of an
emergency (police officers, trusted neighbors, store owners, relatives,
etc.).
Go over some lures or tricks that dangerous adults may use:-- Offer a
ride in a vehicle-- Offer candy, gifts, money, jobs, etc.-- Request
help-- Use of threats/fear-- Pretending to be a friend or trusted
adult-- Offer companionship
If a child feels that he/she is in danger - YELL, RUN, and TELL!-- YELL
loudly to draw attention to yourself and the stranger-- RUN to a safe
place-- TELL an adult what happened
More tips can be found on various child safety websites. SAFE offers a
complete guide of Safety Tips for Children at scheduled presentations. For
SAFE's Safety Tips for Kids at Home, click on the link below. You also
visit their website, www.sfsafe.org for more safety tips.

10 BIGGEST TIPS FOR RESIDENTIAL SECURITY
1. Keep doors and windows locked when away from the home. Approximately

half of all residential burglaries are made via unforced entry.

2. To lock a door or window means it is held tightly in place, and does

not budge when pushed, pulled or lifted. Even if a window is left

open for ventilation, (no more that three inches) it should be locked

tight in that position to eliminate movement

3. In addition to being equipped with good locks, a door and door jam

should be of sound construction.

4. Conduct a systematic security survey of your property. Begin at the

front of the ground floor and work to the back, then to upper floors.

Determine needs for improvement based on the conditions of doors,

windows and hardware present.

5. Keep the property in good repair and appearances as much as possible.

Good maintenance enhances the look of good security.

6. Maintain visibility of the property by trimming bushes and

maintaining adequate lighting, with both standard and motion sensitive

lights.

7. Install a 180 degree wide angle door viewer on the front door and

look before opening it.

8. Be alert when answering unsolicited visitors and callers. Do not

provide entry or information to people until you have determined who

they are and that you have reason to provide it.

9. Consider having an alarm system installed as a back up to the

physical and personal security measure you have taken. Obtain estimates

from at least three companies before purchasing a system.

10. Join or establish a SAFE Neighborhood Watch on your block to network

and plan a crime prevention strategy for your specific area. Contact

SAFE at 415-553-1984 for more information.
