IBERVILLE REDEVELOPMENT - PUBLIC MEETING
THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2012

Please join us if you can to see what is in store for this project.

Thursday, May 31, from 6:30-8:30 PM there will be a public meeting of
a federal preservation impact process occurring regarding the
Iberville Public Housing redevelopment. Why is this of interest to
you, if you do not live in public housing?

The area impacted is not just the Iberville Housing Development
itself, but a large “district” around it, with boundaries from Rampart
(an edge of the French Quarter) to Broad Streets, Tulane to St.
Bernard Avenue. If you are interested in the French Quarter, Tremé,
downtown, Esplanade Ridge and Mid-city, you should attend this
meeting.

There is a proposal to redevelop Iberville, which, of course, needs
significant improvements everyone agrees! The proposal is to replace
the 800+ public housing units with 900+ units, but change the mix to
1/3 public housing, 1/3 market place (meaning just regular renters)
and 1/3 workforce housing. Because laws do not allow an actual
decrease in the amount of public housing units, for every housing unit
removed, another one must be created someplace else – so it is
anticipated that over 500 new public housing units will be created and/
or placed throughout this new district, adjacent to and within some of
our important historic districts. We’re not sure if the new scattered
units will be in new construction, or if in single family homes or in
multiplexes. While they no doubt need renovation, generally the
original brick Iberville buildings are solidly built; and many feel
that these well made buildings, if renovated and properly maintained,
will last longer and can be better maintained than proposed new
construction, so we should not be quick to sign big construction
contracts for new housing construction. This might not be a good value
for the taxpayer – or for the residents of the units.

Everyone deserves good, affordable, safe housing – so it is important
for you to be informed and involved. See what you think about this
plan. This is your opportunity. Thank you!

Below is the notification for the public meeting concerning Iberville
Redevelopment. The surrounding neighborhoods and groups that are
affected by the project are encouraged to attend. Please help spread
the word. Community input on this project is important.
