CM Guidry requests full overview of Mayor Landrieu's "NOLA for Life"
strategy, including success metrics. "The Criminal Justice Committee

Like everyone in our community, I am horrified and angered by the
brazen shooting that occurred at a Mothers' Day second line parade
this weekend. My thoughts go out to all of the victims of this latest
tragedy and their families. I would like to recognize and thank the
police officers, EMS first responders, and parade-goers who bravely
and heroically gave assistance to those who were shot, likely saving
many lives. The NOPD has released video surveillance footage of at
least one suspect, and I urge anyone who may have information to come
forward so that the perpetrators may be located quickly and brought to
justice.
As the Chair of the Council's Criminal Justice Committee, I have asked
the Administration to give a full overview of the Mayor Landrieu's
NOLA-for-Life murder reduction strategy at the next committee meeting,
currently scheduled for Wednesday, May 22nd at 2:00 PM in the Council
Chamber at City Hall. This includes a review of the various programs
under the NOLA-for-Life umbrella, the goals and targets associated
with each, the metrics being used to measure success, and staffing and
budget requirements. Putting a stop to the endless violence and
bloodshed on our streets must always be the top priority for us as a
city, and so the Criminal Justice Committee will be looking closely at
whether NOLA-for-Life is achieving its purposes. Reforming our
fractured criminal justice system is also a critical component of any
comprehensive violence-reduction strategy for our city. Residents must
feel confident that those who commit violent acts will be tracked down
and held accountable through a transparent and constitutional process.
Nothing short of that can be considered success.
