Ok guys, something a little different. Would you guys be interested in doing a charity push on Silver Comet or Big Creek? Basically, a half day push on flat land. A small entry fee (that goes directly to charity) would put you in the drawing for free stuff (to be determined). That should get more folks to show up. I would like to try to do it before the end of the summer. We have almost 70 people in the group now. If we can get 20-30 to show up, that would be awesome! I can talk to the manufacturers about getting free stuff for the giveaways at the end.

Big Creek would be 10 miles (to the end and back), Silver Comet could be anything we want it to be. Helmets would be required at a minimum for entry. All ages.

I would like to make this non-commercial. But we wouldn't get the same number of people showing up.

So some of you guys give me your thoughts. I would like to do this before the end of the summer.

The manufacturer donations I would be looking for are:

Complete Longboard
Set of Wheels
Concrete Wave Subscriptions
Slide Gloves
Set of Trucks
Shirts
Bearings

So there it is....

out. What charity would this be going to?

Not sure yet, got any good picks? I was thinking something for kids. Maybe a skate related charity? It won't be a huge donation, but its something good from the group.

Count me in, as well. We may be able to talk drawl70 in, too. Chris an
I have been doing runs on the Stone Mountain PATH a couple times a
week and logging some miles.

Might as well throw the PATH into the mix. 17 miles with all but about
three all on the path. It's not all flat. I haven't done end to end,
but it's on our list to do soon.

I'm totally down for the cause (whatever it ends up being). I know
Mark K would be up for this, too. I'd prefer Silver Comet for the
longer distance we could do. Mark and I have been pushing along Stn
Mtn Path once a week and 10 miles goes by pretty quick.

How cool would it be to get a hold of someone who doesn't have auto
insurance who lost there car in that parking garage collapse in
Midtown and throw some cash there way. I know thats a stretch.

A charity I'm rather fond of is the Global Angels. Its focused around
kids but not really skating. Its an international charity to help
kids from different backgrounds. Their website is below.

Great idea, Chadd!

How about donate to the skatepark they are trying to build at Swift-
Cantrell Park in Kennesaw? They've got the land, the permits, they
just need the money. They've got a small ramp structure to hold them
over until they can lay some concrete.

http://www.kennesawskatepark.com
We can buy a brick or two.

I think it would go a long way for us to show active support of public-
use facilities and giving back to the community. There might be a day
when we want to host a legit event on public property.

Is it going to be non-profit? We can't really call it a charity push without a charity... The board rescue thing looked pretty cool, but I would like to do it local.

what would be really cool is if we could do a 24 hour charity push or
however long it took to complete the Sliver Comet start to finish..
it is just over 33 miles long... so if we were able to do it 3 times,
it would be 100 miles exactly.... Now, if we were doing it for
something like LiveStrong, or anything, that cold easily gain media
attention...

Good idea for someone who's not used to pushing or pumping any real
distance. I'll have to hit up everyone's favorite Chippendale's

Comet from the trail head in Smyrna all the way out to Rockmart and it
never even approached a 1% grade I would bet.

It's less than 3% on the whole trail. www.silvercometga.com

If you are good at pumping, you could pump even the "uphill" sections.

My vote is for Silver Comet. Here's a link from SilverFish Directory.
It gives you an idea of distance and speed if we were "racing". Some
peeps did 30 km (18.6 miles) in an 1hr 38 mins.

http://www.silverfishlongboarding.com/forum/japan-china-southeast-asia-asia/96722-sunday-mass-30km-longboard-push-race-cleaner-air.html

So now I guess we decide on length of Charity Push. I'm up for 25
miles or more.

This all sounds like great fun, and for a good TBD charity. Count me in.

Could we get a meet up at a convenient location (maybe a bar in the REI area?) to talk through some more of the logistics:
Possible dates
Start/end points - may want to skate back in towards town to avoid crowds?
Post ride festivities
Recon ride? I've never skated the Comet, but eager to.
Merchandise - shirts, etc.

It may be time to start getting some names together as to who can help with what.

Cheers, Mark

Mark,

I am planning on riding the Silver Comet next Saturday 7/18. Probably 20 miles. I have a friend coming in from Cali that skates. We could call that a recon ride. I have been there before, it's awesome.

As to the rest, yes, we do need to plan.

Needs:

Hard Date before Aug 10.
PR stuff (event web poster) I need to send it to Loaded so they can post it in the newsletter.
Post Activities
Pre-ride meeting (http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=33.8418512&lon=-84.5181012&z=16&l=0&m=h)
Start - End - Mavell Rd Trail head (http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=33.8418512&lon=-84.5181012&z=16&l=0&m=h)

Ok guys, I am making an executive desision. I talked to the guys at Boardrescue.org, they are a hugely worthy cause. They are really excited about us doing this. Good people doing good things. They help people nationwide. I will ask that they try to concentrate on the ATL area if there are needs here. They also said that they get major discounts on gear, so our donation will go a long way.

If anyone has an issue with this decision, let me know.
