Webb and Streeter on Authenticity: follow ups
|
| |
Hi, I thank Mike Albertson for giving us a reference to Eugene Webb's book on the Philosophers of Consciousness. In reviewing this book Carla Mae Streeter (SPIRITUALITY TODAY Summer 1992, Vol.44 No.2, pp. 132-142) makes two points (among others): 1) As the new millennium opens before us, an ecclesial person must be... more »

heuristic concepts
|
| |
Dear Phil, and others Lonergan distinguishes heuristic concepts from explanatory concepts and I think suggests that a series of explanatory concepts are unified by a single heuristic concept. He mentions 'the nature of' and 'function to be determined'. Would it be fair to say that a heuristic concept runs a course of centuries and are slow sea changes of... more »

Ricoeur, Marion and "skillful means"
|
| |
Joe, good point. It is part of the GEM task to dialectically and foundationally evaluate great thinkers and separate the wheat from the chaff. Levinas and Ricoeur were good at that, as is Marion and his "team". Much progress is being made along this line in the present attempts of Christian theologians to lay a deeper basis for interfaith encounters. For... more »

Fwd: VERBAL UNIVERSE AS PONS ASINORUM
|
| |
Doug writes:I subsequently found I don't agree as much with those who see a leap with MiT, Tracy goes on to say that he thought Method should be a bit more intellectually rigorus, and Lonergan pointed to Langdon Gilkey and his wife. "Would you ask Langdon to prove his love for his wife?" Lonergan asked. And Tracy admits that Lonergan was right.... more »

urgent action
|
| |
God help us and may the GEM world be "relevant" in the light of this scenario: Ahead of the United Nations climate conference in Copenhagen, international aid organizations have warned that "urgent action" is needed in order to prevent global hunger due to climate change. Africa would seem to be the... more »

schemes of recurrence, bees and Metropolitan John
|
| |
Pierre, thanks for that link (YOUR blog?) on the bees and Metropolitan John Zizioulas. The quote below taken from the "bee link" parallels, to my mind, what Levinas and Marion have done from a Jewish or Roman Catholic perspective to counter secularism or the extremist Nazi ideology: "Metropolitan John's influence is widely felt, both among Protestant and... more »
