Hey Guys and Gals,

I figured this might be interesting to the radio hams and potentially
others interested in Radio receiving in general.

There's an app I spotted in the play store called 'SDR Touch' which
isn't free but I think there is a free trial of it, anyway, that's not
important.. What is important is that with the right USB cable, phone,
operating system version and this app.. you can connect one of those
really cheap SDR compatible dongles and decode the stream from your
handset without needing a dedicated PC.

Pretty awesome I think!

Regards,

Awesome, it didn't occur to me that you could do this without a rooted device. Will try and report back...

iSDR for iphone is free and does not need a USB cable..

I can use my iphone to listen in to our connect radios at work, or the radio frequencies and signals that we use to control the trains,
even more interesting really since the jubille and northern line are about to be upgraded to radio controlled in the next year or two.
instead of that little pink cable in the four foot that they use now to controll the trains.

I've got SDR Touch. The free version is a bit frustrating as it's badly crippled, but I just upgraded it as I wanted the waterfall display for a job. It's not bad if you just want a quick view of signals, but the maximum scan width of 1MHz is annoying.

Good info thanks Adrian.

Mark good idea have a play :D

I'm waiting for my new dongle to arrive.

Michael isdr requires an analogue frontend.  Which is easy enough to build though,  Down convert the rf to something like 1khz and feed it into the idevice microphone. Would be cool if there were an Android version of it.

It would cooler if it was ported to Linux as a library.

Running on a raspberry PI...

suddenly you can link all your raspberry PI's without Wifi...
= great news for home automation projects.
and a new say for deregulated home radio use.
with radio then in the make shed, exciting things may happen.

sounds to good to be true, there must be a hole in there somewhere.

What i meant is you could make all your pi's link together on wifeless RF with no additional hardware... :0
maybe just 1 or 2x 20cm of wire attached to GPIO (Transmit) and the audio Jack, (Recieve)

I've hopped on the bandwagon and ordered one too. What can you do with it?
