Hello all,

A few of us would like to take on a large project to take to makerfaire early next year.

As part of the plan we would need to store a caravan in one of our three parking spaces during the build as the actual project is housed inside of one!

Would there be objections to this? We are scouting for possible caravans now so can't give dates yet as to when we would want it to arrive. Will give more info as we get it.

Hugs

No objection from me as long as there's a plan to remove it after
Maker Faire. Sounds like a great project, if it's the same one Chris
was telling me about.

At the worst there would be a new request for storage after MF (a last resort that I would expect to be denied for more than a few days stay) more more likely it would be stored at a couple of locations or just scrapped.

A packet sniffing caravan gets my seal of approval.

It's worth noting that MF isn't until April 27th/28th 2013.

Also are we likely to get grief from the landlord? I'm not sure how happy he/other tenants will be if we have a caravan in the parking for several months, it may be worth checking if anyone else has long term stuff stored in any of the spots and if there are any gotchas in the lease. I say this mainly because it would suck if they decided that it was brought in by travellers or something and had it removed.

Personally I think it's an excellent idea but I'm not someone who's going to be affected as I don't drive.

The space next to one the Hackspace has a car that has been there since before we moved in so I don't think the landlord will give a monkey's. ....

Fair enough, it may still be worth checking as it sounds like the landlord isn't too happy with us so and it would suck to have stuff trashed through poor rules application.

Also probably want to make sure that the caravan is kept locked or something to stop it becoming someone's home.

Sounds awesome, you need any help with it?.

weve discussed pre-emptively clamping it ourselves to ensure it cant be wheeled away (or clamped again..), were also discussing some sort of alarm system as well.

In any case, who (apart from us) would steal a caravan that looks like a starship?

Cunning!

Many people I'm sure especially mid build :p

I'm mainly doing my standard "look for every last possible problem" thing

Talking of which will it be meteor proof? Have you planned for that?

do we get a general description of what the planned project is or is it very secret until the faire?

because the hints sound cool.

a few of us spent an afternoon playing this: http://www.artemis.eochu.com/ its a starship bridge sim and its rather fun. We thought "hey wouldnt it be ace to build a bridge to play this on.. with explosions! and smoke! and lighting! and panels that explode out of the wall!"

So...

I recently start work on breaking the network protocol in order to get events from the game multicast using OSC. That now works and we can start triggering fun stuff from the game. For example if we want to install extra screens to add atmosphere:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIr1kh8k7YA

we can :)

So this is the project, a small shuttle bridge for 3/4 people (captain, helm, weapons and engineering) to fly missions in the game. Were going to gut a caravan, install lighting, smoke, pyros (maybe..) and popping panels full of wire.
We may possible make it look like Starbug too.

If you're going the DMX route for things, I have 4x RGB mixable LED
strobe panels that can be on loan.

I take it the rule about not sleeping in the space will also apply to the caravan?

Just a shout out that with Maker Faire drawing ever closer and our application to exhibit at make faire approved we will be looking to start the build out at the space very soon!

in case anyone has forgotten what this is about:

we'd like to take over a carparking space until april in order to build/store the project. General consensus before was "ok cool!" but we thought we'd let everyone know again

I may be able to throw some parts your way that'd make nice visual
assemblies.

Great, thanks Sci, chuck them my way as I'm dealing with the build/mod of the caravan!

we could use a box to store all the parts for this project in, mines overflowing with switches etc

Just wondering guys... are you not scared the *whole damn caravan* is going to get nicked? Or at the very least the big screen/projector in it? :/

We will be taking basic precautions, wheel clamps etc and nothing as pricey as the projector will be kept in it while we are not working on it. But it's still a risk yes :-)

I'd like to plan for us to be able to remove all the expensive parts at night, hence my request for laptops on irc earlier :)

Perhaps we can GPS it too

also i'd like to be able to store a box in the members shelves area for all the gubbins that we cant leave in the caravan, just a single members box in any available space, properly labelled and out of the way

any (reasonable) objections?
