Hello all,

After floating the idea on IRC I thought it would be worth posting a proposal to the list.

Background:

I have been lamenting the decline of the makers at the space, we used to have much more visible making and learning. This has been eroded by those on political crusades, or camping out at the space just wanting desk space to get on the internet </rant>

One of the things I envy from other hackspaces are workshops, we don't do those any more, lets change that! A good example comes from nottinghack http://nottinghack.org.uk/?p=1433

The idea:

Fab Fridays - Running fought nightly (opposite graphics hackspace), with differing workshops on each week. A small fee would be charged for most of these to cover materials for those running the workshops (with a little change left over for a deserved drink at the end). I would love to get a few of us together to find and vet the workshops. This means we shouldn't end up with someone 'taking advantage' by charging high fees for a low cost workshop.

Everyone has their own skills and abilities that they can share, what could you help teach others? Knitting, PCB etching, soldering, origami, modelling with fimo, how to wield a dremel with skill... We have a tendency to think of what we know as easy to learn from the internet or books, but the beauty of the hackspace is coming together to learn and create, lets make awesome stuff together!

We already have the beginnings of a workshop to show you how to make a custom cast and turn it into a candle!

What do we think, can you help make some awesome too?

I'd like to instigate "Silly Science Tuesdays" again, with things like "glow tuesday" (where bought in anything glowy/blinky to mess with) and those times long ago where we'd mess with Vacuum Delivery Systems, Reubens tubes or lasers/smoke.

Something monthly with a set theme perhaps? Discuss it all on here/irc/wiki then one tuesday we do it!

on topic:
I'll help with the candle stuff, done it before and have some materials leftover too!

This sounds like an excellent idea. I'd be delighted to run a workshop
on jewellery-making using paper, ink, glue, and (optionally) lasers -
it always goes down well when someone asks what I'm doing in the space
and I explain.

(Examples: http://www.eithin.com/2012/10/15/raffle-prizes/ )

I've got a suggestion to widen the workshop content. How about... if we didn't have someone to teach for example, making dovetail joints, we just work through a tutorial together. That way you get the fun of doing a workshop with other people and the choice to do any workshop you'd like!

and my axe!

*ahem* at some point i'll do a sketchup/inkscape/laser cutter workshop. Are we collating a possible workshop list?

Its an option, but something I would rather keep in reserve. One of the great things about having tutor lead sessions is being able to ask questions and have a dialogue, its not the same if your asking google!

Although one of the best ways to learn about something is to commit to
doing a talk about it :).

Love this idea, would like to contribute, shall try and put together a
list of possible workshops for people to pick from when I'm less
plague-riddled. Possibilities include wood and soapstone carving but
my brain is mostly full of snot right now. As bogey-based crafts
often offend, I'll do it later.

Thats fab! (hehe)

I'm wanting to get at least 4 workshops on the list on the wiki before we start to give us a buffer of them to help with shedualing.

Please feel free to add your own to the list!

I added a couple of workshops to the list.

Making bespoke juggling equipment that's tuned to both your body and
your practise style.

The base techniques can be applied to any form of equipment for object
manipulation, and to any training style.

Might be some ideas for tool making too, have to think about that
more...

Hi Jodi,

Alot of the workshops on that list are very stagnant, I would rather those who offered them added to the Friday list themselves as it will be more likely they will run them.

I want to get a couple more workshops listed to give us a buffer before starting out on them, this looks like it will be a little after new year.

I'm keen on the idea of Fab Fridays, so wondered if there has been any progress on this? If not, it could be a good thing to start up in the new year?

Could some of the workshops on the workshop page be included in this also, as they look like they've been waiting to be run for a while? http://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/Hack_Evening_Workshops

Also, we could copy some of Nottinghack ones, like make a bat detector? http://nottinghack.org.uk/?p=1487

Could some one please do a welding workshop, there will be plenty of people willing to learn, also gives us a much needed safety tutorial.

Welding safety needs to be one-on-one really. Beyond that, pretty much
the only way to learn is practice.

Or the 3-in-1, that would be awesome too.

Hi,

I think your thinking more of our tool safety training that is run separately. It may be worth having a search of the wiki to see how to get trained in this.

It was specifically welding / 3-1, I did a load of both in school, about a million years ago. So i could do with a recap, not so much the making just i don't want to break either the machines or myself. :s

Welding safety is pretty much :

Protect your eyes and everyone else's from the arc
Watch where the sparks are falling; do not be on fire
Don't touch the hot bits

3-in-1 safety is 'think what you're doing and what the consequences will be' .. which is MUCH harder to teach.

i'm up for teaching anyone any skills that i know how to do and that they want to know, anyone who has been in the workshop should know that i am always willing to help/ show / teach, im experienced in general tool usage precision engineering, welding , workshop safety theory of construction , power tools , and hand tools. i;m also realy up for learning from others if you can teach me anything i'm totally willing to learn. i was talking to johnty last tuesday about doing a power tools safety demonstration with some good visual demo's that will stick in peoples heads.
