About the game:
- amazing strategy game, it's said to be the most ancient game in the
world
- Rich strategy thinking with very simple rules but complex gameplay.
no computer has yet defeated a good player (unlike all other
boardgames).
- more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game)

The workshop
- The idea is to gather everyone interested in the game, users and
learners
- We will start a course with the basic lessons so anyone can start
playing from the beginning
- We haven't decided when to do the workshop, so anyone interested
please reply with your preferences

Please reply whoever is interested!!

Hi,

I'm sure Lizard from the Internet will be interested. She taught me to
play at hackspace. I've been playing a little, and know the basic
concepts but really am not very good at all (28 on a good day :p).

I'm keen. Count me in.

Great idea!

I used to play a bit of Go, haven't played in quite some time though.

I'd definitely try and come along.

I'm up for a game.
Got a board upstairs that's not seen any use in the last few years.

I haven't played in years...

Not that this means i was any good... :))

Anyone who likes sparring, martials arts, dance, interior design, or
workspace layout, should have a look. It's a great set of mental
exercise for understanding how you use space, distance, and tempi.

I can't always guarantee when i'll be in the hackspace, but let me
know when it's happening, and if i'm there, i'm there.

May be able to be along next Tuesday, in which case I'll bring my
board! It's a crappy card and plastic job, but it'll do...

i have read and thought a lot about go since about 2000-2001.

i have read and recommend:
lessons in the fundamentals of go
strategic concepts of go
mathematical go (actually a bit trippy -- applies infinitesimals and
integration by making theoretical room for stones that lie 'at
infinity')
killer of go

if anyone from the hackspace is up for a game over internet, i'd be
down. send me an email. saturdays are my only free days at the moment
though, so i can't attend this meeting.

Can't make this Tuesday, but would be keen to attend a future meet (as long as people can tolerate someone who's regressed to beginner levels — it's been years and years since I last played).

Hope you don't mind, but I just posted a reference to this thread the
the British Go Association mailing list.

It's possibly short notice, but they may have people willing to bring
boards, and Go knowledge :)

Check them out here: www.britgo.org

I'm somewhere around 6-8 kyu, and have a board and stones. I'll try to
come on Tuesday.

I'm up for playing more go. learnt at uni and really enjoyed it but haven't really had much chance to play for a while.

The first Go event is on Tuesday the 17th, at 19:30

We are expecting to gather a dozen people!

Please bring a board those who can.

I am not sure yet if it was a good idea to make it at the same time as
the social Tuesday, since this first time it will be more like a
social event I though it was the best. I am sorry if it causes any
space inconvenience, if it does please let me know for the next event.

Cheers
Quim

probably wouldn't help in a game against death, but the ability to
quantize board positions according to mathematical framework has
helped gnugo and other go playing programs =)

i highly recommend this video series to anyone interested in go.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjrvrH1bKIw (berlekamp is one of the
book's two authors, skip to about 5:00 to avoid the annoying
introductory material)

i love the observation (made scientifically, through experiments
involving professional players in specially designed games) that
certain phases of the game involve 'overtaxation' (the opening, moves
near the edge) on playing a move...

have you thought of doing a doodle for the next event?

http://www.doodle.com/ -- lets people vote on which day things happen...

on an unrelated note, this study just got written up (today) regarding computer go and network theory on a 9x9 board:

Next time try asking permission (not an announcement deep inside an
existing thread) before taking over the whole quiet room for a
non-hacking related activty, tuesdays are social night, not
anti-social night!
Lots of people left early or didn't bother turning up tonight due to
lack of space. A pub would have been a better venue for this.
