Hi all

I'd like to try a minor project with some polarising sheets which may involve pretty colours.
might there be any unwanted dead LCD screens anywhere which I could deconstruct to aquire some?

There's a huge 24"one waiting for the bin, next to the mail box...

sweet. I humbly request that it not be binned for a few days.
I'll be in in a few days to tear it apart for it's innards.

plan make some pictures like this: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3449/3369189272_3e8c85f097_z.jpg

ah well. if anyone else had a broken LCD screen I'd appreciate a chance to recover some useful materials from it.

Yes it was saved for me to fix.
Which I have failed to do.
Let me have another go over the weekend, if I can't by Sunday then I'll leave it by the mail with a broken sticker…

I should still have a bunch in my shed. Already dismantled since I just
wanted the plastic. Will check if I kept the diffuser sheets. I think I
did to stop them getting scratched.

This is very decent as non-working monitors go having DVI/composite/svideo/HDMI/VGA inputs, it'd be a pity for it's only use to be a polarising screen donor.

if someone can fix it then it would make a great addition to the space.

there is already one just like it that is always being used whenever I come into the space so I am sure that if this broken one was fixed then it would also get used a lot of the time.

Okay, it looks like I have about a dozen of the polarising layers. At
least I think they are, they seem to do some refraction and change the
angle of the light too.

My box is down at the very bottom at ground level in the new section of shelving inside and on the left with "David Murphy" written on it.

it's Polarisers I'm looking for.

initially to try taking some pretty photos with 2 layers of polarizing sheets and things in between but I've also been wondering what the effect would be like to stick a strong light in the middle of a gyroscope then make a couple of spheres from hexagons of polariszing plastic at right angles to go on the outer layers.
though that will taks some practice with some normal plastic first.

When might you next be in the space peter?

Thanks so much!

I think they've merged polarisers with some sort of prismatic sheets in
modern designs. All of the ones I tore down had a prismatic effect, but
no discrete polarising-only layer. Or at least that's what it appears.

With luck I should be in on Saturday if I an get a lift.

Even with a prismatic effect it might still work ok. fingers crossed.

there are a few old monitors left in the office here
Martin is driving over now to collect somme other stuff - if he has room I will see if he can get them in his van, otherwise they will be scrapped tomorrow

If you were in the space today I apologise, I wasn't able to make it today.

With the returns from EMF camp today and the additional couple of monitors from friday we now have filled the monitor shelf.

The monitor without a stand which I threw into the van because of your initial request turns out to have a DVI input as well as VGA and so should probably be kept if we can transplant a stand from one of the other monitors.
I have placed this baseless monitor on the shelf for now to prevent it getting hacked.
if I get time tomorrow I will try to 1) check that it works 2) find a lesser monitor that has a compatable base and do the transplant

There was a monitor at EMFcamp that got broken, but we kept the stand
as I thought the earlier batch had some stands missing. I have no idea
if it's the right type, but it's worth checking.
