Hi,

A couple of people have been chatting on irc about upgrading and/or
changing the display board thats above lovelace.

I've got a 16 char starburst vfd with an spi(ish) interface (takes +5V at
~1amp) that i wanted to add to it to recreate the power meter.

I also wanted to sit down with it for a while and try to finally diagnose
and fix the problem where it breaks when babbage is rebooted.

If anyone wants to take on either task please say and you can have the
vfd, alternativ ly if someone dosn't want me to fiddle with it was so and
i'll leave it alone.

Hi Jasper,

I actually already packed a new shield for the arduino to bring with me tomorrow to re attach the power meter!

Feel free to try and work out the bug, but I haven't seen the board fail in quite a while *crosses fingers*. I would rather the board stays as it is, but I would love to see it get a sister/brother!

There are something like 6 or 7 more of those matrix displays which
I've promised to donate to the space. They've been sitting in a box
next to mine for a while waiting for someone to actually do something
with them.

One on each side of the doorway to the quiet room warning of the time for the next event would be awesome...

How about one for the next train in each direction?

What about one in the workshop?

+1 for trains and quiet room events. I could probably spare the time to
throw together some code for actually getting the data, if that would
help the project moving along?

I have a feed from TFL we could point it at Babbage/tesla/lovelace/ weaklemondrink or whatever

Buses from the nearest bus stops would be cool too; especially late at night because sod 5am bus stops :|

we definitely need one in the workshop for the doorbell and IRC announcements.
Maybe a good project for the new Arduino/microcontrollers user group could work on?

It failed again when babbage was revooted a few days ago.

This would be most awesome. Happy to help if required.

I know little of the magic that makes the board go, but would it not
be possible to put an Arduino ethernet shield on there, or replace it
with a nanode?

Possible yes, a good idea no. I am not aware of anyone who has found a good
enough ethernet library for the Nanode that can run 24/7 without failing, and
I suspect the same is true of libraries for ethernet shields. The space requires
a machine running 24/7 anyway (currently babbage) that handles far more
important tasks so having the board running independently is of little benefit.

As the maximum headway on the ELL is 10mins, the time of the next train is
information of limited utility. The first/last trains in each direction
would be a much more useful thing to have.

Info re. Quiet Room bookings etc. would be more useful, as would the
status of the laser cutter etc.

All of the above would also be better presented as a slide show on a VDU.

Any volunteers to make this happen? Perhaps using a VM on the proposed new
server and a USB/Ethernet KVM device?

Not entirely true, southbound West Croydon trains are every 15 mins
until 2300 when they are then 30 mins. Same goes for Crystal palace
and New Cross. Even missing a train and having to wait say 13 mins if
you just missed it is annoying, so I think it would be useful.

How big are these new displays?
We already have a wall map of the local area, but it doesn't have many
items of interest actually marked out. If we printed out another map of
maybe just the surrounding 100m or so, could have the displays point at
the relevant locations?
Or print the map really big and embed the displays in the map directly.

Or plugs on the map, where you plug the display it gives relevant info (train, bus, pizza opening hours etc).

Is this what is known as bikeshedding?

I printed out/edited those. They cover such a huge area purely so people know where Sebright Arms is (which is quite far away in one direction) and Old Street tube station (which is quite far way in the other direction).

Actually, I think you may mean the very large, plotted out map by the front door, maybe, which is hard to read in comparison to the other maps I put up...
