Do you think that your friend Steve would be willing to hold another session over the summer when I'm back in the country? I've been trying to get some training for welding for ages...

Cheers

I would guess so, as there is already more interest that can probably be accommodated in one session.
It may even need splitting into types of welding.
I'll be speaking to him later today..

Awesome, I'd hoped that would be the case. Hopefully once a core of people are levelled up it should be easier to keep going anyway

Have there been any further developments regarding the welding training? I checked the wiki but didn't see anything, apologies if I missed it.

Due to lack of space for spectators, and of equipment for many people, Steve will be privately-ish teaching a few individuals who will subsequently train others....

We'll let the list know when this has transpired.

ok, thanks for letting me know. do you know how i would go about getting an induction to the workshop and metal-working tools? i have some welding experiance, but take it i need to do a workshop training before i can start using things. do you know who i would talk to for that?

thanks,

I can do a basic /2/here is the workshop" intro.

I can also show you the mini-lathe.

Solexious does the lasercutter inductions. They are usually announced
on the mailing list, but the new belt has to be fitted first.

Talk to Abby, Russ or Luke about the big 3-in-1 lathe.

The kiln we are still trying to re-calibrate, though it may need a
different thermo-couple. There's a copy of the PID manual on top of
it, so if you want to have a look then you can scratch your head, the
same way we've been doing... :))

Though when it's working, i'm happy to show folk basic sand-casting
using scrap aluminium.

Talk to Akki about PMC casting and modelling.

Talk to Hipster, Abby and Phish about fibre-glass. They are also good
with other forms of silicon moulding.

Charles is another person to talk to about silicon moulding. He's also
been using the vacuum pump for resin-doping of hardwoods.

I think you need to talk to Sci about all the vacuum chambers and
vacuum pump systems.

No-one has volunteered to show people how to use the air-compressor
systems yet. But we've only had that tool set for a few weeks now.
Try asking Russ.

I don't know if anyone is currently doing the inductions to the mill.

Ok, my memory has started working again...

Steve was going to train 3 'trainers'.

He's done one already and that is Hipster, and I believe Hipster has already organised a training session. Don't know when, even if past or future.

Anyhow, I'll remind Steve about the other 2. And check if them 2 are still keen.

If welding's getting this much interest now may I highly recommend we
get the welding-curtain stand shortened so it reaches the floor?

Because the floor was the only large flat area to weld on (the welding
bench is neither large nor flat), some of my initial welds could be seen
under it until we put some wood across the bottom of the screen.

Just to add my own interest

Rather than shorten the stand why not weld a strip of metal to it?

Peter "Sci" Turpin

to london-h...@googlegroups.com
Well since either end of it are just swing-arms there'd be nothing to
weld to except in the very middle.

Also I feel the barrier is a flexible curtain for a reason; it allows it
to move over and around small objects and take motion as well as modular
replacement. A sheet of any rigid material will either end up bent,
broken and/or acting as a plough. And be harder to replace.

If we dropped the height of the stand by shortening the poles so the
curtains reached the floor, how tall would the curtains then be? Would
we have any issue with people being able to see over them instead?

Or drop them to the floor, and extend them upwards.

You can order the plastic sheet by the roll.

Add another panel frame that you can slot on top. Cut the plastic to
size and fit.

Also make it easier to put away, and it'll happen more often.

Point taken about flexability! Just an idea.
