we are clearing out some computer rooms at work and a number of 16
port KCMIP devices are now surplus to requirements - anyone interested
let me know and I will bring some along and put your name on them.
Each port will need a dongle to connect the Keyboard, Video and Mouse
- I can find lots of PS/2 dongles and a few USB dongles.

OK, the response seems very enthusiastic - I was just trying to guage
the level of interest so I know how carefully to extract them from the
racks etc.
I think that I am probably going to be limited by the number of
dongles, particularly if people want a full compliment of 16 with each
device.

I will start extracting them from racks and sorting out the dongles
over the next couple of weeks.
In the meantime if people could state how many dongles they want with
each device it will help me decide how many devices to pull

Yes please!

I could do with two devices, and probably 10 dongles total. If that much
isn't available, one device and 5 dongles would still be really useful.

(as with other people, I'm at the space sporadically - there's space in
my box so please fill that rather than cluttering the space)

One or two devices with some dongles would be awesome. Any idea of a
part number for the USB dongles? I'm not allergic to purchasing
them :)
Also I can feed you up on beer or spirit of your choice!

I would like 1 device and 7 dongles please, USB is preferable, but ps2
is fine, I can always use adaptors. I don't have a box, if you can
label and I will arrange collection. Any suggested donation for them?

OK, I have 8 * Avocent DSR 2010 available.
I have started to move them to the space today - only had space to
carry one today but hopefully another 3 or 4 tomorrow. When I do I
will go back through this discussion thread and label up the devices
and required numbers of dongles

I have now transported 6*Avocent DSR 2010 to the space and stacked
them on the black table in the quiet room.
There is also a box of about 50-60 PS/2 Dongles and about 10 USB
Dongles.

I haven't checked any of these devices but they were all pulled from a
working machine room but I would recommend that you try to flash them
to a more recent firmware - Avocent seem fairly cool about making all
this available on their website, try searching for 'legacy' systems.

I have another 2 * DSR 2010 which I can get immediately if they are
needed/wanted and a few more within a couple weeks, again if the
demand is there.

Please help yourselves to devices and dongles - I would suggest that
unless you really need USB for new machines that you use the PS/2
dongles since there are far more PS/2 than USB. I currently have no
more dongles so please only take the number that you will use (and
maybe a couple of spares) because without dongles the DSR's are
useless.

Also, I will be hopefully getting some more devices later this year
which are newer and better for integrating on a network - DSR 2030.
One big benefit of the DSR2030 is that they can present an OS .iso
file as a virtual USB CD/DVD drive to the connected host when used
with a USB dongle.

I have some experience of setting these things up so if you want then
just ask and we can meetup in the space and run through them together

Just in case labelling takes place, I no longer want any.. I just got
over excited and have no use for it.

Would it be cheeky to pre-bagsie one of the DSR 2030s? ;)

Hello Simon,

Thank you so much for this, it is most generous and greatly
appreciated, I popped in this morning and picked up one and a small
bundle of dongles.

These ps2 dongles - do you have any idea how well they work with ps2-
>usb adapters?

FYI: There are 9 usb dongles and still a shedload of ps2 cables
remaining.

We use them at work here, they work fine.

Thank you for this, much appreciated. I don't suppose there is any
of the RS232 dongles going spare? They are also quite useful.

I noticed that there is still a number of these Avocent DSR KVM IP
devices in the quiet room together with the dongles.

Now I don't want to get a name for cluttering up the space with junk
so if no one wants any more of these I will try and find a means to
dispose of them, which probably means WEEE destruction

I'll see what the feedback to this followup is like before deciding on
what to do with them

Most of them are still in the space so if you want one or dongles get them
soon, I'll start ebaying (or just chucking out) next week.

There are also a bunch more that are likely to come available in a
couple of months - most of these will be DSR2030
but I don't want to lug them across town on my bike unless there is
definite interest.

I'll have one of these, and one for Filbert too! These newer ones have
the web interface, right?

The dsr2030s that is. Network is really a requirement for me so I
believe these have built in web servers...

Also I don't suppose you have 1U horizontal networked PDU bars?

More curious about the hardware behind these. The only networked KVM
I've taken apart before turned out to have a single-board PC at the core
of it with a 1.4Ghz CPU and two PCI slots.
Wondering if these sort of things are usually custom-software SBPCs or
custom hardware?

OK, to bring this thread to the top of the list again.

There are still many KVMIP switches in the space and it looks as if
any unclaimed by 24th June will be disposed of in rhe hackspace
clearout.
So, please come and get yours if you still want one - there should be
plenty of PS2 dongles for them as well, maybe some USB dongles as
well, but if not, then I should be able to get some more of those
later. The important thing for now is to get the switches out
