Hi folks,

In mid-January, we'll have a get-together to choose one or more
DIYBio / Biohacking projects to get started on at the London
Hackspace.

The basic plan is for myself (Bugs), Sara, Martin and Tim to outline
the projects that we have in mind, giving everyone an idea of what
resources we'd need and why we think they're cool. Then we'll see
which projects people are interested in getting involved with and sort
out the shopping list for the project(s) that go ahead. So at the end
of the discussion, we'll have chosen one or more specific projects and
everyone interested will know exactly what they can do to help get
things rolling. We'll also have consumed the usual beer, wine, cakes,
etc., which are at least as important in research as they are in
hacking.

So, if you're keen or just vaguely interested, come along. Please let
us know when you're free, and we'll pick a date: http://doodle.com/w3h4ytbpch3ktzi9

As before, the meeting won't assume any prior knowledge about biology.
There won't be a big "Introduction To..." talk like the last meeting,
but all the explanations will be aimed at a non-biologists. Biologists
are welcome to ask tricky questions and, hopefully, answer a few too.

Cheers,
Bugs

I've forwarded this to the biogeeks (http://biogeeks.wordpress.com)
list too. Hope that's ok?

That's great, thanks. I've posted it to DIYbio too.

The Biohacking edited series of talks are now online on YouTube.

1st Talk by Bugs: Biohacking Intro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W5ZshwteUw
2nd Talk by Sara: Biohacking (incl. discussion talks)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=9W5ZshwteUw

Sorry it took so long to edit the multiple cameras are only in the
first few minutes of Bug's talk because the Firewire hub died at that
point. If anyone is interested in what I did to the videos:

- Combine video/audio from 3 sources Hard Drive, Tape (MiniDV),
uStream
- Export audio to Audacity, clean up audio: Noise Reduction,
Normalisation, Dynamic Range Compressor

So if the video quality degrades whilst watching the video is because
I had to source some of the talks from the uStream recording. I'll
also put the original video file on the Hackspace computer if anyone
wants it.

This last weekend I was ill, and ended up watching a lot of ReGenesis, a Canadian drama that's a little like 24 if they were molecular biologists, and not secret agents.

One story arc involved the creation of smallpox from small sections ordered online from various different suppliers. They could tell due to a single-base transcription error in the publicly available sequence that didn't appear in any natural strains. Much in the same way that a trap street functions for maps. Since you guys were discussing the exact same issue, I thought I'd mention. And I recommend the show for similar interesting plotlines.

These are the best explanations of gel electrophoresis and PCR that I've seen so far:

Hi all,

It looks like the most popular time for the workshop is 19:00 on
Saturday 15th January.

Sara, Tim, Martin and I will explain our project ideas, then we can
discuss which ones sound most fun and get going!

We won't assume any biology background. However, if you want a bit of
background before coming along, have a look at Ben's excellent vidoes
[1] [2] and perhaps explore sites like http://diybio.org/blog . Not
necessary, but interesting.

If you have a project idea that you'd like to talk about, please do!
Either throw some slides together and let us know, or just rock up on
the night and share your plans.

See you all at 19:00 on the 15th Jan,

Bugs

Ben - Thanks very much for sorting out those videos!

Gilda - Those are great, thanks! They'll come in handy when we get
started on those techniques at the space.

H folks,

I've thrown a short page together on the wiki, with a few interesting
links: http://wiki.hackspace.org.uk/wiki/Biohacking
Obviously, please feel free to update with other cool stuff you find.
Shortly, we can start documenting our projects.

Cheers (and see you all on the 15th!)

Hi guys,

I am not a member of hackspace yet and just wanted to ask if there will be no issue if I will come on Saturday. I would prefer to see the space before I will sign up and on Tuesday I do my Bioinformatics course so I cannot come to open evenings. Hope this will be fine?

Cheers,
Radek

Hi Radek!

I'm sure that would be no problem.

Best to check on IRC irc://freenode/london-hack-space that there is
somebody there in advance, but Saturday tends to the "well occupied"
side of the graph ;-)

Regards!

I'm interested in this but didn't find out about it until now, so it's
highly unlikely that I'll be there tomorrow. I'll try in any case, and
I'll be checking the wiki page for updates.
