Found an ebay seller in the USA with a limited stock of refurbished NEMA
17 steppers. They're not listed as NEMA 17, but found more info on the
model through another website.
http://cncsuperstore.com/index.php?route=product/product&manufacturer_id=15&product_id=64

They're 4-wire 1.8degree/200-step steppers with a 43.2oz/in 305mNm
torque. Relatively high-voltage with a range of 12-36v, so may not be
reliable for microstepping with low-cost drivers.

They're being sold in lots of 5 for $35. One lot including postage would
come to about 40, which would mean each stepper costing about 8 each.

I've contacted the seller and he's getting me a shipping quote based on
2 and 5 lots of 5. So if we order several lots, the price will come down
further through shipping savings. Total number of lots appears to be 25
currently.

The motors appear to be ideal for 3D printer projects and other small
CNC/robotics.

The listing is here for your perusal: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111056326418

Is anyone else interested in getting a lot or partial-lot along with me
and saving some cash?

Has anyone got any comment on the suitability/type of steppers, in case
I've found an appealing white elephant here?

I note the seller also has some other stepper lots for similar, but
slightly higher, prices. Some 4-wire, some 6. Suspect they would be
covered in the same shipping total if requested.

If there's interest and no technical objections to the choice, I'll
start a short-run pledge page. Will need the money quickly though, so
please have it ready to go if interested.

(PS; these are NEMA 17, not the NEMA 23 req for the engraver CNC. Still
looking there.)

In the workshop, near the end of the member's shelves, is a box with a partially assembled Prusa. I think it's the one Billy's building.  It has two steppers at the top with only a date label, no other markings. They came from me and I think they're NEMA 23 : I'll donate another couple for the engraver if they're suitable.

They're Nema 23's. There's three of them.

They're a little too big for the Prusa parts that i've got.

I'll swap them for three of the Nema 17's.

We only need three NEMA 23's for the engraver.

As the engraver is a project for the space, anyone want to pony up for
the extra three for this swap if there aren't enough going spare? Would
be cheaper than buying them independently.

NEMA 23's should be a drop-in replacement assuming they're not over 50mm
body-length. They 6 or 4-wire? We don't have the connector pin-out yet,
so 6-wire would allow flexibility.

Billy has a mixture of NEMA 17 and 23s. I've got one more similar 17, which he can have (and free up a 23). Two more from that group purchase for Billy would be nice but the offer of two more 23s still stands if  not enough are available to replace his.

They're all 4-wire. I may have some old round-style 6-wire if they're required.

The steppers I have are unknown spec so probably not good enough for the Stratasys, in case anyone thinks that's a better use - if it needs 17s they'll have to be pretty good ones.

Heard back. Collective postage is $80 or $60 without tracking. Not as
large a saving as I'd have hoped, but I'd favour with tracking all the same.

$35 for 5, times the three lots people seem interested in; 15 steppers.
$30 for the one lot of 4 higher torque ones for swapping with Billy for
the Stratasys and CNC Mill.

Total 19 steppers, so highest postage would be ~$4.21ea.

Means for the order, each lot of 5 cheap ones would be $56.05 and the
lot of 4 stronger ones would be $46.84. Total;

$135+$80P&P= $215 (ソス142)

Lots of 5 to pay; ソス36.94 (ソス7.39 per stepper)
Lot of 4 to pay; ソス30.87 (ソス7.72 per stepper)

Before we go any further, any objections on price? *And any risk we'll
get stung at customs by importing 2nd-hand goods or electronics?* Is
there a best type to (legally!) request it be listed as on customs forms?

I've talked to the seller through my personal account. I can either pay
myself and take money directly, but will need it all in advance. Or
people can pay to the hackspace IF the space is okay with paying it on
to me. I suspect the former would have less fees involved. Or I can hand
the transaction over to someone with access to the space's paypal account.

For 8 lots??

Each lot is a lot of 5 steppers. I don't think the seller will split
lots. I'd recommend getting 2 lots then.

If I calculate correctly that'll put it at the limit for the weight
category, so no more additions to this order!

PLEDGE PAGE IS UP!
http://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/Cheap_steppers_pledge

We still need some backing for the single lot of 4 more powerful
steppers included in the order that will be exchanged with Billy for
steppers suitable for the Stratasys and Engraver rebuilds, so please
contribute a spare couple of quid to raise that 30.

Please pay money to the hackspace with the reference "CHEAPSTEP".

Apologies, but can I reconsider? I've realised that I don't really _need_ 5 new steppers. If anyone wants to pick up my batch, it's available.

@Sci - not sure what the state of play is with this, but I'm up for a batch of five, though I can't pay till Friday (in practical terms, I may not be able to process it till the bank holiday)

If that works for you, I'm up for it, if I've missed the boat; c'est la vie.

I've swapped Nick's lot with one for you.
I've also rounded my total up to 40 to throw a few quid toward the
Stratasys & CNC Mill steppers.

I suspect waiting until friday won't be a problem, as we still need to
fill backers for those steppers that'll help the space.

There's been some miscommunication about what steppers are needed for
what regarding the engraver & stratasys. Will aim to come in on Sunday
(or MAYBE sat afternoon) to hook up the offered steppers to the engraver
now I have most of the pinouts and make sure they're compatible. This
may mean making some changes to the order, and change payment prices a bit.

NP.

If the steppers i've offered aren't compatible for a swap, then add me
to one lot of the nema 17's.

They can take payment online, so I'm going to send my money to the

Trying to make it rock solid. Got some ideas for alternate printheads,
so of which might vibrate a bit.
Thinking TR8 size threads will probably do, TR10 at a pinch. Just trying
to work out the best rigid mounting arrangement using 20x20 profile.

I'm intrigued by why a print head might vibrate, good luck with the project!

RichRap's blog
http://richrap.blogspot.co.uk/
...has a number of reprap mods/improvements which I'm interested in
trying, and the gantry project plan B is intended to tackle CNC foam
cutting, with a view to laminating things like glider wings, however,
it has to get in the queue ;)

it'll be precise enough though. We shall see! Regular printhead first tho.

So, I've paid. Will update the wiki when I get home. My kindle fire doesn't seem to want to let me.

Has this been collected yet? Doesnt it get shipped back if you leave it over a week without paying customs?

Got an email back from Paddy. Apparently it requires a reference number
that isn't the tracking number, which will presumably be in Russ's
possession, so we'll have to wait for him to get back.

Reading the terms and conditions however we're going to be charged a
storage fee of 5.50 as Monday will be past the 10-day free-holding
period. Past 20 days it's an additional 1.35 per parcel per day. :(

I think, more to the point, who is authorised (from the post office's POV) to collect. Presumably a receipt for the duty payment could be translated into a refund from the space (or it could be paid online?)

Slightly problematic, since I never had a box at the old space, and have yet to establish one at the new space. I should be able to come over on Saturday late afternoon, and hope to figure it out from there. I was hoping to pick up my lot of five and take them away for onward management. I'd appreciate if anyone involved in this transaction could let me know if they'll be around then, or could park my motors where I can find them.

Regards, Chris.

Do we have a note on the front door instructing deliveries to be made at

I've set myself up with a members box. It's a used club mate box with my name and alias, and some making tape over the club mate logo at the end. It's down the second aisle, third bay, second shelf from the floor. I'd be grateful to know if my motors find their way there.

Just for future reference I was never in possession of any magic
number - the only number given to me by the seller was the tracking
number. If another number existed I would expect it to be on the
missed-delivery slip, which I didn't have anything to do with.

Thanks for that Russ and all the help ordering them!
I sorted the actual items out tonight.

There was no missed-delivery slip or notice of holding fees that I could
see. Have to chalk it up to "fun with imports" I guess.
