Hey guys,

We've found somewhere which would be pretty cool as an interim
hackspace. It's by no means perfect, but it's very affordable (i.e. we
can get it tomorrow) and it's a nice space.

This will be a short-term (1-3 month) rental until we find a space
that's better suited to our purposes, but it's such a good deal we feel
we should go with it. We'd also like to find out how having a physical
space affects the group as a whole without committing to anything
long-term.

It's a loft room at a place called 2020 Archery
(http://www.2020archery.co.uk/) in Barnsbury, where Jonty and I are
shooting every week.

Here are some pictures:
http://flic.kr/russss/sets/72157621789436264/

And here's the location:
http://bit.ly/nmXCq

Pros:
-----------
- It's really cheap (£400/month + a possibly a share of the bills if we
use a lot of electricity, or want to have faster broadband installed).

- There's no contract, no deposit and broadband/electricity are already
dealt with.

- We can pretty much do anything to the space - the building is due to
be demolished in two years.

- Out of archery hours we can have run of the building (which is huge).

- There's a kitchen we have the use of with coffee/tea/microwave etc.

- 2020 are basically willing to help us out in any way they possibly
can, they love the idea of Hackspace. They've already said we can use
all the large storage areas for gear if we want.

- There's already a workbench with a few vices in there!

- Sunday barbequeues put on by 2020, which we would be welcome at.

Cons:
-----------
- It's a bit out of the way (10-15mins walk from Angel or King's Cross).

- Access won't be 24/7, although still very flexible. Essentially
there'llbe no entry after 11pm unless Jonty or I (and maybe designated
others) are there, but you can stay all night and leave when you like if
you're in before then.

- We can't be TOO noisy, as it's in a fairly residential area.

- A couple of 2020 members will be "honorary" hackspace members, as they
are already working in the room sometimes, but they'll just be in there
with a laptop.

To be able to afford this, we'd like to raise the suggested monthly
subscription to £20 a month, meaning we can easily afford the place with
the current number of subscribers. We'll keep the minimum subscription
at £10 a month for those who can't afford the suggested amount.
Hopefully as soon as we actually have a space the number of subscribers
will rocket.

If you want access to the space, you MUST be a paying member, just to
make that clear.

Does anyone have any objections to us renting this space for a couple of
months until we find a better place? Is there more information you want?
We're not going to rent it unless most people are happy with it, so
please give us feedback.

Cheers,

Russ

Is it a secure building then? Not that I'm suggesting people leave
laptops, but could people with boxes of random shiny things leave them
there with minimal worry?

The building is secure and the door to the hackspace will be
locked. The combination/keys will be given to people that are
trusted, or maybe all members, we've not decided on that yet.

I assume we’ll be covered under their buildings insurance, I would doubt our contents would be covered though (they hardly have any contents there anyway).

sounds great, fantastic find guys.

(membership @ £20 now we have a space is pretty good value too, IMHO)

when can we move in? :)

Thats fantastic news, and the place looks nice too :) I'm happy to up my membership subs if it means getting the space.

At least when I make the meeting tonight I can say I made meetings even before we had a fixed space!

Great work

Great news, well done.

It would be a shame to lose the ability for newcomers to come along
on a specific hack space evening, if you're still planning to have
those. If you are, have you considered e.g. allowing members to
sign in guests for £5 one-off?

Or is that not worth the hassle for the sake of a few months?

Cheers,
Andy

We're definitely still planning on having free fortnightly evenings at the
Hub - the new space is nowhere near big enough to hold as many people as we
had tonight.

I think we're going to move the evenings at the Hub to be
workshops/socialising, and if you want to actually get on with something
you'll come along to the space (and pay ;).

Sounds like an ideal start. I have no problems with 20£ a month. also
have an old g3 imac and fujistu tablet to donate as soon as a space is
confirmed.

That sounds like a good balance. When do we get to see the space?

If anyone wants to come over to Barnsbury to see this space at about
7pm this evening, drop me an email directly. We only want to bring 5
or so people so it'll be first come, first served ;).

Great news indeed!

Have you been able to sign the deal yet? Or any other progress of interest in this front?

It is all well and good having a space, but what equipment would it be nice to have in it?

How about everybody making suggestions, and see if any of it can be scrounged from somewhere.

I have an A4 laser printer / copier that I have no immediate need for, I am sure that a suitable PC can be found from somewhere to connect it to - if it is only acting as a print server, pretty much any old bit of crap will do. A wireless access point would make using it a great deal easier, does anyone have one kicking around?

I have various other bits of kit that I might consider loaning, subject to it being secure and unlikely to be abused. Oh, and people actually wanting it there taking up space, of course!

I am not sure how much use I would make of the space myself, as I live in west London and work in Watlington ( two thirds of the way to Oxford! ) and have a well equipped workshop at home. Physical space for bigger projects is about the only attraction for me at the moment. Somebody suggested a maze solving robot a while back, that would certainly need a fair bit of space for the test maze, or perhaps rather larger robots running around downstairs when the archery people aren't around. Anybody up for building a robot archer :-)

As this is my first post, and I haven't made it to any of the meetings yet, a little bit about me:

I work as an electronics designer / embedded software writer, currently working for a company that supplies stuff to the oil industry. The latest project is a redesign of a high power DC motor control system ( 750V 1200A typical ) that used a whole bunch of obsolete parts. It is looking like the new one will use a network of five 32 bit processors and a 5.7" TFT touchscreen for the user interface. I will have to do absolutely everything on this project - hardware design, software, PCB layout, production engineering and most of the mechanical design ( the rest is inherited from the original product ) as well. The joys of working for small companies!
