As some people may have already noticed, the Nook Simple Touch just went on sale for £29. Nominally an EBook reader, it's really a trivially rooted Android 2.1 tablet, with epaper touchscreen, wifi, and great battery life.

I've picked up a few, and I'm in the process of charging and rooting them. If anyone here's keen on one pre-rooted, let me know and I'll drop one in your member box (tell me where it is) in return for £30 via Paypal.

I'd like one, send me your paypal and I will send the monies. I have no idea where my box is however, haven't been able to get to the space since the move.

I'd be interested, happy to send you the money through PayPal, though I'm not sure where my box is as I haven't been in to the space since the move either. I should find out for you tonight though (if I can get out of work on time for once).

I just used this package here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351

DD it to a memory card and reboot and you're sorted.

I've just ordered 2 from Currys, though they are out of stock. The
site told me they will send them when they are back in stock.

I'll just have to wait and see whether they cancel my order if the
price goes back up before they get more stock...

I ordered mine from the Nook website last week; it's just arrived :-)

I wish I could root it without having a microSD card handy that I can

I have just been informed by B&N that it "Is On Its Way" ...No. It's not. You've just created a UPS label for it. Its has a tracking number...which tracks it too.....B&N. They are a complete shower...I strongly suspect they were not ready for the demand, and simply refuse to acknowledge that. They better bloody refund by P&P as I paid for 'next day delivery'. That was Wednesday last week.

Still....It's on its way.

I got a bit frustrated when I went on their e-chat and was told my online order couldn't be cancelled because it had progressed to far -- where progressed to far meant they'd taken payment and wouldn't reverse the transaction, despite the fact the item hasn't shipped.

It's no the end of the world because my aunt wants it now; but it's not quite the same as dealing with Amazon!

I have ordered 3 from B&N, or possibly 4 given the first one failed due to their inability to deal with debit cards.  One has arrived so far.

If anyone ends up with spares I may be interested, if my others don't turn up.

Just had an email about my Nook order:

"Due to overwhelming demand for NOOK® Simple Touch, you should expect
to receive your device by Friday, 17 May"

So why did they tell me on the 1st of May that it was going to be
dispatched that day???

I got one of those emails as well for an order they'd assured me had failed to go through (I'd attempted to pay with a debit card), followed soon after by an email telling me to disregard it. Maybe someone accidentally pushed the "Mark all as dispatched" button?

Same here - though they'd previously told me they'd cancelled that one due to lack of stock.
Now I don't know if I'm getting charged for it or not (I have one on order from currys).
Initially they'd "had a problem with my credit card", emails to their support dept went unanswered.
I'm pretty unimpressed, to say the least :(

The one from B&N has been delivered, since they ignored my email to cancel it and if there is a way to do so on their site then I could not find it.
Also got an email from curries to say that the one from them not on it's way after all, it's been subject to an unspecified delay.
Moaning aside, it's a nice bit of kit for 30 quid! Even just as a reader. Not rooted it yet, only just got it charged.
I'll see what it's like as is for a little while just out of interest I think.

my plans got changed yesterday and I did not get to my local Sainsbury's
as I had planned. I had signed-up with them to be notified when they had
them available to purchase on-line - I received a notification at 06:12
this morning. By 08:30 they had sold out again.

I will keep trying for you (and Nin lil'izi)

^ seems a littttle bit unfair that people are buying multiples of these.

that said, can pick one up for 40 on ebay, so really, with all of the hassle trying to find a cheaper one isn't really worth it.

For the avoidance of any doubt, I am attempting to buy extra Nooks to
share with others subscribed to this group.

I picked up two extra at my local Sainsburys in Milton Keynes

I'm still trying to find one of these if theres an update from someone.

One of them is yours Nin lil'izi.

I re-read the whole thread but apart from Nin lil'izi I don't know who wants one and who already has one ( trying to avoid a repeat of the two mobility scooters thread mixup).
Spike did you want one?.

Will be at the Mindhackers tonight.

Sainsbury's seems to have still stock. I bought a Nook Glow last night for 69£ but still plenty of 29£ ones in Sainsbury's Harringay (North London)

Good luck hunting

Tim, the second one is yours.

Will you be at the hackspace tonight? or someone who is willing to be a middle man on your behalf.
I don't attend the hackspace much, living so far away.

I'd be interested in one if there are spares.

Thanks sc_r, I followed your link and found the nook available on johnlewis and put my order for 2. They still have the nook in stock for £29 if anyone wants to order. Hey if you guys managed to hack and access to android tthen do you have a link for the hack. I'm interested in getting kindle app working to be able to access my kindle library.
Cheers

This procedure works perfectly:

It includes a link to the more complicated NTGAppsAttack process, which will let you install Google Play (bear in mind that it isn't licensed from Google).  The apps available on there are actually quite limited, but include Opera Mobile and various e-reader apps.  You might just want to refer to it to install your own choice of .apk files over adb.
