Ok...
3 people have confirmed their places for blacksmithing tomorrow.
So there are 2 up for grabs...
And no I haven't thought of a better plan than posting on here.
Cheers
Paddy
It's at Stepney City Farm

where is it? in the space or elsewhere?
I'm interested in doing this but not free tonight.
Although on that note, I haven't posted my interest before though so don't want to jump the queue.
It sounds like this is popular. Is it going to keep running indefinately? Can we start to show interest for next week/time yet? A can definitely fill two places next Wednesday if that helps.
Maybe it would be a good idea to make people pay upfront or put a deposit down to reduce dropouts?
Cheers,
Paul

Hi All,
There are 2 places free for tomorrow, Hipster's (hurt his hammer hand), and mine (unexpectedly have to be elsewhere).
There is a wiki page... http://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/Blacksmithing
Please reply asap if you are interested, priority will go to those already on the page, and ideally I would like my place back the following week, as I am close to finishing what I want to achieve.
Cheers
Paddy

Then it is yours..

Yes it is, 6.30pm..
And it is run by Ian. Shout and rattle the gate…
No problem. My previous email referred to the last 2 places. You, David, and Siobhan have the first 3..

What would you like to do?
I'm keen but it's a lot of kit, amounting to a lot of money, and not practical to do in the space..

No, the kiln comes nowhere close. Nor does that anvil, unless you intend using a 2 ounce hammer.
A gas forge would solve the extreme smuttiness problem and is relatively easy to make, and ok for small things.
Still not sure how ‘allowable’ that might be ..

Hello Tom!
We've done iron before in the kiln. Just heat it up orange hot, pop the metal in the end and leave it till it gets cherry hot then strike while the iron is still hot :)
We made the crucible tongs for the kiln like this.
That said, these were wrough iron. Not sure if mild steel has some properties that make it less mallable when its red hot...
Bai oh bai bai bai
Are you sure it was wrought iron? Wrought iron is only workable when yellow-hot. Mild steel is workable-ish (ie doesn’t crack) down to cherry-red, but really we want yellow in order to seriously reshape it. Presumably the tongs were mostly a bending job.
Are you still up for it Mark?
And are we sure John is not? I can email him directly if in doubt..
I will be coming, and I’ve edited the wiki accordingly.
