Hello!

I wonder if any of you have seen a source for old tools (quiet at the
back) in London? I'm thinking wood and metalwork tools particularly,
hammers, planes, saws, chisels, measuring kit etc. Maybe carboots,
antique markets, flea markets etc? It seems that I stumble on places
like this quite often outside London (recently at an antique shop in
Lyme Regis), but don't see it so often in the city.

I'm interested in sharpening and refurbishing tools, which might be
something other hackspace members can get involved or benefit from.

Cheers,

Chris

There is a guy who's sometimes at Greenwich Market or Spitalfields
Market with old tools - but possibly too vintage for your
requirements.

I bought a nice shoemakers hammer from him a month or so back. At
least I think it's the same guy, could be two different guys stalls.

Pete Tamber from Tools For Self-Reliance comes over to the hackspace
around once a month. He's always got a nice selection of older hand-
tools, usually of excellent quality.

He usually announces on the mailing list when he's coming over.

There's also the Workaid shop in Chesham, if that still counts as
London for you. http://workaid.org/ They mostly send tools to
developing countries, but also sell a lot of them off on site. These
are all refurbished/sharpened, since that's what they do,, but they're
also always looking for volunteers.

I've got some tools that I don't need. I'll be at Hackspace tonight
for the graphics
talk/workshop so if you ask for me maybe I can help. My name is Francis.

Cheers,

Francis.

If anyone has old files I'd like some to smash up with a lump hammer for the firelighting session I'm doing...

theres a small but tardis-like 2nd hand/antique store just off the top of brick lane, on the west side - in there you will find a massive selection of old and used hand tools.

i hope someone here knows what its called and where it is.

Opening times seem somewhat spontaneous..Give'em a bell beforehand, perhaps?
But got loads of unusual stuff in store.

Thank you all for the great leads. I've added the information from
this thread and other places to our wiki:

http://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/Suppliers#Secondhand_Tools

I'll update it with more detail as and when I visit the places you've
all mentioned.

Thanks again,

Chris

Are they still trading then? It's a great place, or it was when I was
last there about 8 years ago.
