If you left loose stuff in the member storage shelves that's not in a box or other packed form: we cleaned up your mess for you. You can buy us beers later :)

What we did with such loose stuff on the member storage shelves:
- if it's near a half-empty box: we put it inside that box
- usable perspex, mdf, wood, etc: we put it in the respective shared pile
- random cut-offs, plastic parts etc: we binned it

Everything that appeared semi-useful or of value we put in one of two big crates labelled "member storage junk". You can sort through these in the new space, if you're now missing anything. These crates will likely become fair game at some point in the very near future.

Everybody's been given plenty of warning, numerous times and in numerous forms, so I assume that you don't care about anything that you still left in this unpacked state. If however you are now outraged and need someone to shout at: come talk to me. Although I will likely just politely smile and nod, and leave it at that. :)

(I'm now dreaming of better ways of managing member storage. E.g. make people regularly update a label on their box to extend their storage period; or similar schemes that put the burden on the storer, not the hackspace.)

Thanks Martin,

The current system is cool, maybe a purge like this more often will stop the build up ;)

Hi guys,

I just realised that I have a blue bag on the shelves in my slot rather than a member box (we were out when I joined up a couple of years back and I never got around to replacing it with a box).

I'm not in London this week and the move completely escaped my mind.

My bag should be/have been in s16b05. If someone could either a) transfer it to a labelled box (deadlight - Karl Williams) b) let me know where it has ended up so I can arrange things myself when I'm back next week.

My apologies for not thinking ahead and arranging it myself; I'll owe whoever can help out a beer and the universe some karma.

thanks,

 - Karl

Link box registration to membership status so someone gets alerted when
a member leaves & their box needs to be junked?

Yikes! Haha I should of picked up my tripod on Friday, I guess I will find that later in the "Storage Junk". (It's labelled and I have no worries attached to it)

I'm happy to be the one that gets alerted, but I seriously doubt you
want someone with my coding skills messing about with it. ;P

The two "member storage junk" crates are now in the basement in 447, in between the first two rows of shelves near the entrance.

Just to briefly elaborate on this, the specific approach I was thinking of:

Every 6 months hand out stickers with a new colour, and have members label their own boxes. If you're not in London but still care about the box: just get someone else to do it for you.

Every box that's still on the second-to-last colour gets garbage collected.

This would be super low-tech, puts the burden on the storer, and catches boxes where the owner stopped caring & will never pick them up; with a minimum amount of management (every 6 months buy a new set of coloured stickers, put them in a prominent location, and send an email to current + recently expired members.)

This all assumes that we care sufficiently about the space we're using for member boxes; based on the DNH dates I found on member shelves I wouldn't be surprised in 30% of all boxes aren't already abandoned. If that's not a problem then the current system (have a cleanup session every 1-2 years.) probably works fine.

Hi Martin and all
How do I request a member box? Jim MacArthur sent a emali to group and informed that he is not going to use his member box as he is moving out of London. When I ask him to his his box he aid that belong to the space and I should get it assigned from the space but I? can not find a wiki page telling how to request one. I hope you guys can help. Thanks.
I think ever 6 months is along time. you will need a year to find out if a box is abandoned. how about doing it ever 3 or 4 months.

Necati,

You don't request a member box, you  just grab it from the pile and find yourself a space in the shelves to put it.

There's only a problem if we run out. At present there are quite a lot of spaces in the shelves and you can easily reclaim a spare box from the move effort by just tidying up things in the workshop - there are lots of boxes that just had a few items in them for transport.

Thanks Artag
In that case I will use (reclaim) Jim's box as there were harly space for a new storage box. That should help to tidy up the abandoned boxes.

I think Jim's box contains a couple of motors, which can be put in a boxfull of motors at the far end of the shelving, near the fire pumps.
