I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I received.
I had a great time, had some delicious food and an amazing time in the caravan :D I really want to try that game again!!

Going back there would be lovely but I can't go there that often (because It's still expensive)
Thought if anyone is interested, I might have found a cheap way of going back :P

Beer.

Price of 3 Cases of duvel: 75£ (72 bottles of 33cl)
Price of 2 bus tickets: 48£ (on average, prices vary)
Total: 123£

That makes 1.7£ a bottle.
(Ive rounded prices down, I'm not counting tube ticket prices or gas prices in Belgium, I don't want to make a profit, I just want to come back :D)

So please let my know if this is a good idea? (or if you want an other beer :P)

It's a good idea until the day you get caught selling unlicensed alcohol.
Then it suddenly starts to look like a less good idea.

Damned, you got a point there.
The part about the beer is closed.
The part about how awesome the open space day was is still open ^^

Good point Adrian.

We have had temporary licenses before. It's how we were able to sell
alcohol.

Talk to Russ about when the next licensed event is on. We could
organise something for then.

He'd still have to make sure the duty paperwork is covered:

True, but donations would still be ok.

It might be worth organising a beer run to France...

Doubt that would count as personal use.

Besides, it misses the point that Bart wants money so as to visit the space again. Not just lavish us with cheap beer.

True, but if we're organising a beer run, there would be space in the
van...

If you're coming from Belgium, bring something more exciting than Duvel. You can get that easily enough for £1.70 over here. Bring a few crates of Rochefort 10 and Westmalle Tripel.

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/arriving/arrivingeu.htm

Gifts are no problem, duty free :)

Apart from that, if someone with a legal background or the knowledge wants to do the research and tell me how taxes are supposed to be paid, go for it.
It's rather cheap...

from: https://www.gov.uk/alcohol-duties
Most beers are charged General Beer Duty at £19.12 per hectolitre % of alcohol.
High Strength Beer Duty is charged on beer that exceeds 7.5% ABV and this is in addition to the General Beer Duty. This additional charge is set at £5.09.

Let's take the Duvel example, we previously calculated a cost of 1.7£ for a 33cl bottle. (and has 8.5% ABV)

Taxes would make this (19.12 + 5.09)  * 0.0033 * 8.5 = 0.68£ for 1 bottle.

That makes a total price of 2.38£ / bottle.

Round that up to 2.5£ and it would include the gas price store-bus stop.

You can still sell them for 3£ and make a decent profit.

Yes, but it's £2.19 in Tesco.

They don't have many of the more exotic ones, it's true, but there are other places, eg

http://www.beersofeurope.co.uk

and some smaller places closer to London.

Not that I want to put you off, of course, but I think you'd struggle to make it worthwhile without a van and a fairly big investment.

They're often on a 3 for £5 deal at Tesco too, working out at £1.67

Ah well, it was worth calculating to see if it would make a difference.

If you guys would ever do a beer run to Belgium, let us know.
You're always welcome in Ghent/Antwerp/Brussels :)

I think I'll just keep it to the occasional room for beer exchange then :)
