Subject: Webserver configuration
Could anyone be kind enough to help me with a recurrent problem on my
VPS.net webserver?  It is probably due to a badly coded site.... or
perhaps not.

It seems to freeze, or crash, whichever, at regular intervals but not
sure why.  Here is the error message from today - its an SMTP fault -
dont know if  that is what it is every time.

The error is:
Jan 11 09:08:23 webmin saslauthd[1498]: do_auth         : auth
failure: [user=orders] [service=smtp] [realm=mail.off-grid.net]
[mech=shadow] [reason=Unknown]

Thanks to anyone kind enough to give it some thought.

I'm probably missing the point. But first have you checked your not
having a memory allocation issue?
I don't know of your particular hosts setup. But have found with similar
random fails on my own. That something causing ram to spike on the host
could possibly lead to your own vps being denied ram even though the
container says it's got some left.
Just don't rule out an issue with the host iron or an abusive user on
the same box.

My thoughts are that you have not supplied enough information for
anyone to be able to help.
Don't assume we know what you know.

I guess vps.net is a hosting company? So start off with the type of
account you have with them.
What webserver are you running?
What OS is runnign your webserver?
What crashes/freezes? The website? There is a difference between
crashing and freezing, namely that a frozen system will unfreeze
without user intervention.
You say the problem occurs at regular intervals, what is the pattern?
can you trigger it yourself?
Where is the error message coming from? webmin admin interface? webserver log?
Also have you already spoken to the hosts support dept? what did they say?

toby
