The owner, who was the son of the guy who started it has just died.
I've been told by the lease holder that we can loot the place.
Facilities:
Photographic lab
Radio valve workshop (a museum has already looted a lot of this)
A workshop that made motorbikes.
Two lathes including huge piles of cutting tools for lathes.
a 5" sheet metal cutter
Every size of metal press.
Other metal shaping tools.
A forge (already loaded in my van)
There's also reels of wire and piles of electronics magazines from
the 1950's to the 1980's.
This place is to be bulldozed and turned into landfill in a few weeks.
I'd like help stripping the place of anything useful before then. I'm
sure that it will not all fit into the London Hackspace but there are
other Hackspace that lack lathes and stuff.
Can anyone help me with this?

I don't know if anyone's seen the french film opf low-volume valve
manufacture. I think I posted it here or on IRC a week or so ago. With
that in mind, things to look for would be
- spot welder. Also useful for jewelry making and small repair jobs
- anv vacuum equipment, especially a high-vacuum pump and
valve/pipework. Might also be used for working with neon signs.
Neither of these would be large if originally used for valve manufacture.

Any general-pupose lathe or mill tooling would be good, especially
stocks of high speed steel for cutters, and more specialist things
like threading or gear-cutting cutters. Avoid any accessories that are
specific to the lathes themselves, but morse-taper fittings like
chucks and centres might be found.

Sounds very small for a guillotine (which we have already) but that
could be a bar cropper. Possibly useful.

A small flypress would be good. A broaching press (no inertia
assistance, just a lever like a one-armed bandit) would also be small
and has a lot of uses for rivets, cutting tools, inserting / removing
bearings etc.

Punches and dies, especially in common sizes for squares and round
holes, and awkward shapes like D-connectors are quite hard to find,
expensive, and very compact for storing. If there's anything like that
it's very worthwhile.

Be wary of wire - if it's old it can be tarnished and hard to solder.

I can come down and loot the photo lab. It'll have to be a weekend,
though, or late one evening – I don't finish work until 7, and I think
it'd take me at least 45 minutes to reach Crystal Palace.

That place looks as if it has been stuck in a time warp! There was a cycle shop like that in Ealing but it closed
about 20 years ago and I very much doubt that it ever had a lathe.

I'm staring at the Myford lathe and that beefy looking little
steel-rolling rig! Also the metal shears and that brazing hearth with
bellows!
Do we get the Morris Minor too? They never die. Some TLC it says? Pump
the tires, fresh battery & some petrol, I bet it'd run on first crank.
Mine lived in a field for 3yrs & had a rusted-out floor, and it started
first time (after the new fuel pump).
Are any of the parts & materials being salvaged too?

I also know of some other people who would be interested in the tools.
Pete Tamber organises a charity shipping tools to developing
countries, East London Inventors Club is setting up a workshop, and
i'm setting up a housing co-op with some people from New Cross, and we

I'm helping with Young Hackspace this Sunday afternoon, but apart from

Some last-minute scavengers suggestions!
* Grab the big stuff first. High-ticket items like the lathe, forge,
gasifier, guillotine, rolling-former.
* Grab the valves. Even if we don't use them, resale on New-Old-Stock
valves is VERY HIGH. Assume each one you find is worth a fiver.
* Don't bother sorting through the many drawers, just grab and stack
them full. They can be sorted later.
* It sounds like there's a staging area of sorts around the back. Try
and get the stuff set aside out of any builders way.
* A scavenger can never assume something will still be there if they
come back later. Make a pile, then load it into vehicles for maximum
efficiency of loading and the most load per vehicle-full. Someone may
have "tidied" the remainder of the pile off into a skip by the time you
get back.
I would suggest a search-prioritisation of:
1) Tools; any and all.
2) Parts; accessories and componants (likely to be parts for tools, or
collectables of value), bike gears, chain.
3) Raw materials; sheets, bar-stock, nuts & bolts.
4) Memorabilia; (lowest priority) remains of existing projects, signage,
etc. Items of very selective interest.

That's only true for types still used in guitar & audio amps (e.g. EL84, ECC83/12AX7) , and really
old pre-war types. Bog-standard radio & TV valves of the sort you'd find in an old TV repair shop
are near worthless, even new in box.
Pretty much anything used is of low to zero value unless a very unusual type.
