I've been approached by a lady running events at the Festival of
Britain. They would like us to get involved on the 13th and 14th of
August to do something similar to what we did at MakerFaire. i.e. have
an area set up where we can be making things, with the idea of getting
members of the public to join in and make stuff too.

I suggested Mitch Altmans soldering workshop but he is in Berlin that
weekend. So, we could easily run a soldering workshop ourselves as
well as other creative stuff. We basically need to think of things we
can do to encourage members of the public to 'Make it Mend it Hack
it'.

It sounds ideal for LHS and I think we should get a gang of people
together to attend this. It could also be a great recruitment drive
for London Hackspace if we make some flyers or have an information
board on display too.

Who's up for it and any ideas?

Maybe a few will go to CCC but i'm sure we'll still have plenty left
over to attend.

why dont we have a hack-off? We get a couple of tables as "teams" and
a pile of broken(ish) toys/gadgets then start hacking at them to do
cool things, perhaps with help/suggestions from the public

Whatever happens, we need something big and impressive to show us off.
Obv we cant quite match the tesla coil stuff from makerfaire :P

if were trying to get people to make/mend/hack how about we ask people
to bring dead gadgets along? Either we can show them through fixing it
or hack the buggers to make them more awesome?

This sounds like an awesome idea.

will we be indoors?

Damned good idea!

Yes, we will be indoors and have an area to ourselves. I believe we
pretty much have free reign (within reason) as to what we can or
cannot do.

Also, there is nothing stopping us from inviting the guys from
BrightArcs to join us. The lady I spoke to from the Festival said
having the tesla coils might also be a good idea.

I'd be up for taking the arcade machine down, and showing off some of the British indie scene...

Can we not also do the music? :(

Yeah of course. It just needs an audio input to the coils I believe.

I've emailed BrightArcs to see if they would be interested in
attending.

If bright arcs join us the music should be fine as that's something they run anyway.

is there a really simple way we can invite the public to make games?

Hey you remember I was talking about mashing up Knightmare with Real
Life? Reckon we could do something with the arcade machine like that?
Someones playing a game on it but its actually directing a real
person?

Hi everyone,
I'm the lady Mike was referring to, organising the Southbank Centre
weekend in August.
I popped into LHS a couple of weeks ago and was so inspired by what
was happening I'm hoping to join myself!

I've been reading your ideas of what could happen at the workshop,
they all sound brilliant. We could always ask members of the public to
bring old electronics appliances for a hackoff, or I'm sure I have a
few broken toasters/old computers I could bring!

Or if you want, people can bring a mixture of stuff and (re)create a
mini-LHS in the Festival Hall. Bring the game machine as well as do
hacking projects. Give people a taste of what happens at the LHS and
recruit a few people along the way!

We already have someone running a soldering workshop and 3D printing
that weekend, so you could use the 3D printer if you wanted to for a
project.

To help me plan the weekend, could you confirm which day(s) you can
come down. At the moment we have events on both 13th & 14th August,
running from around 11am til 4pm. And let me know what sort of space/
equipment you need so I can then start the ball rolling my end to
source materials etc.

Thanks guys, can't wait. Jing

I'll get working on this idea then, anyone got an old treadmill I can
play with?

oh and jing: I can make both of those days :)

ok I've got this planned in my head:

Arcade machine up front running some generic platform game. joystick
movements and button presses are relayed to a set of lights on a
treadmill. If the player runs left it flashes a light (to say RUN
FORWARD, or RUN BACK) and runs the treadmill. If they dont fall over
then it moves the player character to match on the screen
I'll set up a kinect to extract the player from the scene and
superimpose that on the platform game.

Jumps can be handled easily enough.

Right, I'll get on this tonight :D

I'd be up for coming along and helping out in whatever capacity I can
for at least one of the days, I would probably be of most help on
something to do with the arcade or games but am up for helping with
whatever.

Rich.
