Hi all,

As I mentioned to many of you via private email, a journalist has requested to film the biohackers doing some experiments. Previously, it looked like this filming would take place next Wednesday, but I've just heard that he would need to film this week or not at all.

I realise this is very short notice, but it would be nice to do a couple of filmable experiments this week, if possible. Just the usual stuff -- running a gel, or setting up PCR. Of course, you shouldn't feel obliged to do any experiments or be filmed if you don't want to be.

If you've got any questions about it, please email the journalist directly. His name is Gareth Furby and his email address is gareth...@bbc.co.uk .

I have managed to double-book myself this week, so I probably won't be in. But I definitely will be there next week!

Nicholas

You probably want to let the main Hackspace list know, in case they decided to some shots around the space:

Hi Mark,

I plan to, but I wanted to let Jonty and Russ know first, just in case this counted as "commercial filming" and they wanted to ask for a donation (or if there was some other complication). So I emailed them privately. If they haven't gotten back to me by tomorrow I'll email the list anyway.

Yep, during the normal meeting. (Sorry that wasn't clear.)

I'll be in and I still have the stuff from the exhibition, so I'll bring that in, too ;-)

Yeah I'll be there - I'm up for doing a new experiment too.

Cool stuff.  It generally depends what the filming is for, and whether it's going to affect the rest of the space.  Will wait to see what they say.

Cheers,
Mark

May I point out that we are running desperately short of some reagents, agarose in particular, so if we're going to run a gel somebody needs to bring some agarose. Possibly we could order some, as well.

We have enough agarose for one gel (yepings agarose) as far as I know, but yes we need to order some more on wednesday

I'm thinking of dropping by on Wednesday. What times are you around?

Will be at the talk by Steve Kurtz ( abioartist/activist) at 2pm
Wednesday 3 Oct at New Academic Building (NAB) LG02, Goldsmiths
College, University of London during the day.

Cheers
Brian

Still abroad, and on my way back to London, but won't make it on time, I am afraid...
Enjoy the meeting, etc. today!

Guys,

Should we meet earlier today to discuss some experiment for the filming? I'm going to Steve Kurtz's talk at Goldsmiths but could be at the Hackspace 'round 5.30-6.00, is anyone in that early?

yes Funkenstein I'll be there around 530- 600. I've also laundered our lab coats so they should really glow under UV! Personally I'd like to try the blood typing experiment as it seems you can learn a lot of basic science by carrying it out although it's probably too long for the filming

Guys, I won't be there tonight.

Hope everyone enjoyed Gareth's enthusiasm for biohacking tonight!

I know someone in the workshop didn't want him to mention the hackspace itself in the programme because of limits of space for new members. Did anyone mention it to him?

I saw someone say that on the list too, was it the same guy who said fixing had already been arranged? I can email Gareth if no one has already. He was definitely very enthusiastic! My favourite was when he excitedly filmed me and Mike trying to work out the capacity of our tubes by filling them with water (750ul, in case you're wondering)

Unless it's a trustee, I don't think you should take the opinion of a single hackspace member too seriously. In any community there are people who want to make it a secret club. The space needs to expand anyway.

Glad filming went well.

Nicholas
