Interesting site on one man's experiences with the fracking industry
in the USA, the Guide to Fracking is a very solid explanation of the
processes involved(with diagrams), below is the start to the page:
"Welcome to this field lesson in hydraulic fracking (aka frac'ing or
fracking): Today, we are observing Reprobate Energy of America, a gas
company pursuing natural gas in the Rocky Mountains. The company has
drilled the well bore, and has now brought in another subcontractor
(Reprobate uses sub contractors all the time as a means of insulating
themselves from accountability) - Schmucks-R-Us Frac Jobs. Let's watch
how the process unfolds....
First, a brief introduction to the kind of production we'll be
observing:
Like many other areas of the US, the geology Reprobate is drilling
into is comprised of coal seams, sedimentary sands, shale and
underground water aquifers.
Reprobate likes to go after two kinds of natural gas: 1) gas which
comes from decaying coal. In this way, they are in effect producing
coal seam gas. And, 2) gas which comes from oil-bearing shale (or
ancient deposits of organic clay material). In this way, they are
producing shale gas.
Regardless of whether Reprobate calls their operations "tight sands",
"shale gas" or "coal bed methane", many geologies are similarly
comprised of shale, coal and sands in areas favored by Reprobate such
as weak, over-pressurized and vertically faulted anticlines;
sedimentary basins (ancient inland seas); or, highly fragile
watersheds.
Reprobate may refer to their production as "coal bed methane" or
"shale gas" or "tight sands" - depending upon what type of predominant
geology they are fracking with; but, the production (thermogenic) gas
they go after may be sourced from either shale or coal or other
decaying organic deposits.
Reprobate doesn't really care where the gas comes from. They would
mine a cow's ass if they could figure out how to do it without getting
PETA stirred up.
Now, let's check in with the boys and see how things are coming
along.................."
