Hello group members:

I am an older person returning to recreational riding in the last couple of years. I live in Southfield and I am finding it difficult to find certain useful information.

For the purposes of commuting, errands, and recreation, I am looking for city-level maps (physical or electronic) that indicate bike paths and bike routes that will safely and simply take me around and through Southfield and adjoining cities in a variety of directions. I would, as much as possible, like to avoid mile roads as I consider many of them poorly designed and dangerous for bicyclists. I would also like to avoid interminable winding neighborhood streets that get me nowhere. I am most apt to bicycle around Southeast Oakland county and Southwest Macomb county but could see going farther afield with the use of the bus system and/or rails-to-trails and other such bike paths.

I have seen the MDOT regional maps and the SEMCOG county maps. These are fine as far as they go but they do not provide the detail I would like.

Do such maps exist? Is there any clearinghouse for them? Have cities created these individually so that I would have to contact each city in turn? Have any biking groups or individuals created any such maps?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Michael,

I am not sure of a clearing house for such maps. Our club (Clinton
River Riders) has a few people that might be able to help with their
expert knowledge of the area.
Gary Haelewyn bluec...@yahoo.com
Rick Moorman pkmo...@wideopenwest.com
or Al Barton bicy...@gmail.com

They are useful and friendly ..... usually. ;-)

Google maps is getting more friendly for cyclists. There is a symbol
that looks like a bicyle and will keep you off main roads plus show
paths in a highlighted green or purple usually. It is not perfected
yet, sometimes using it a guide will take you a crosswalk instead of
crossing straight across on residental streets.

Also there is another club called the Slow Spokes that might have some
local rides to interest you. As well as our CRR
lmb.org/crr .

Thanks

Les
