Extract pages out of a protected document

Hi all,

 

is it possible to extract pages with Acrobat out of a Rights Management protected Document? (Of course this pages also should be protected afterwards.)

Hi Michael,

It is not possible to extract pages from a Rights Management (RM)
protected document. There is no permission available in RM for this.
The reason for this is that a user could circumvent the policy
protection by extracting all of the pages from the protected document
and placing them into a non-protected document.

In response to the second part of your question, a document user isn't
necessarily permitted to be a document publisher as well and therefore
would not be able to policy protect a new document created from
extracted pages of a protected document.

If you have the credentials and or the policy allows that.  The policy owner can determine that such is allowed (anonymous policy with rights for copying etc. but unless you can satisfy the policy – there is not even a notion of “pages”.  Just an envelope that look s like a PDF on a filesystem filled with AES encrypted cyphertext.

Note that you can also make policies that allow access to the metadata (XMP)

Hey guys,

I think Duane's post may introduce some confusion. There is a
permission that is specific for page manipulation. However, page
"extraction" (i.e. extracting one or more pages from a protected
document into a new document - protected or not) is never allowed as
an option. Here are the two permissions that illustrate the point:

CHANGES_ALL_EXCEPT_EXTRACT_CONTENT - Page extraction is never allowed.
CHANGES_INSERT_DELETE_ROTATE_PAGES - Pages may be added, deleted and
rotated in a protected document (using Acrobat).

Just to clarify – page extract can be done using manual techniques (if allowed) such as cutting and pasting.  Fred is correct that there is no programmatic way to do this directly to a policy protected document, unless you are the document owner.

The original question however was about extracting pages from Acrobat (Michael: “is it possible to extract pages with Acrobat out of a Rights Management protected Document?”) .  If cutting and pasting is allowed in the policy, you can cut and paste (hence extract) pages from a Policy protected document.  If you are the document owner, you also have this privilege in some versions of LC.

My last message on the subject, I promise!:

The point I was trying to make, and I should have just said so at the
beginning, is that the Acrobat menu item "Document/Extract Pages..."
will never be available when you are viewing a policy-protected
document, regardless of the permissions that have been granted. My
interpretation of "extracting pages" was using this menu item and not
the clipboard functions (i.e. copy, paste).
