Keyboard layout

In Windows, I can use a quick hotkey to switch between my usual American and German keyboards.  I have googled a bit, but have not found a tutorial on how to accomplish this in Ubuntu.  Does anyone know?

I have personally never messed with this, but here is an article that might prove to be helpful:
