Automating network connection

Hello All,
I am new to linux, I am currently using Fedora 12 distro in my laptop.

I like to schedule a download in a particular time, but don't want to
stay connected in internet till that period.. can someone please help
me with any script or command-line that would connect/disconnect to
internet.

Currently when I am connecting my cable to ethernet card, it is
autodetected and network connection is established.. so can you
suggest me a solution? Any help is much appreciated.
