date format - spaces not "0" in day

I am using date +"%b %d"
to return a string something like
Mar 08
BUT what I really need is it to return
Mar 8
i.e. the leading zero on the date replaced by a space.
I could use a simple sed on the string but the problem I then have is that it would also turn "Mar 10" into "Mar 1 " - which is not what I need.... more »

Running "yum update"

I ordered a VPS with CentOS today to be used as a Web server.
Should I run "yum update" regularly?
Can it be automated with Cron?

I've inherited a shedload of monitoring scripts designed for use on solaris systems, with amongst other stuff the use of iostat -En
which provides an output like

I found that I had two servers with differing levels of rpm. so I have now downgraded the higher level server to the lower level (so to speak - lower level is a production server so dev now replicated its rpm level).... more »

high load average in idle state

With linux kernel 2.4.22-1.2199.nptlsmp (I know, it's very old) Sometimes Load average increases to big value (over 7) but my 4 vCPU are in idle state (5% busy every cpu). My web procedure was gone down so I found out that process (with 4732 process id, see my following output) was in 'uninterruptible sleep' state (classified as 'D ').... more »
