The Role of Linux in Networking

Hi All, i live in a country where internet penetration is weak, we often rely on VSAT for internet access. due to the slow nature of VSAT, i had to acquire some skills in linux to manage our (little) Bandwidth. Now there is proliferation of GSM modems for internet access, which is much cheaper, and faster, so now i'm wondering where i can deploy my linux(networking) skills.... so i'm wondering what other stuff i can do with linux.. Thanks
