It is still in 2.6.37-rc8. I got some debugging tips from Alan Stern, but have
not had time to follow-up. I hope/need to make some progress before 2.6.37 is
released.

Does reverting commit 448f53a "drm/i915/bios: Reverse order of 100/120 Mhz SSC

This FREQ has been there for years. Not that it makes it smart, and
I'll obviously send Ben's patch upstream for 2.6.38. Still processing

Well, the patch is in the mainline, which is why it's still listed.

I can confirm that this "regression" still exists with the kernel
2.6.37-rc8.
The Call Trace is basically the same:

...
Kernel panic - not syncing: map_single ...
Pid 935, comm: NetworkManager Tainted
call trace
panic+oxbf/0x200
? default_spin_lock_flags+0x9/0x10
?swiotlb_tlb_map_single+0x1ce/0x250
?map_single+0x46/0x60
swiotlb_map_page+0xa6/0xf
... and then the FREEZE ... only a hard reset brings to live (with
2.6.36-2) Linux.

carlos.

Thanks for the info.

Why did you put "regression" into double quotes?

Because, at the beginning I tough it could be also a DELL firmware problem.
The 32 bit version works fine, the 64 bits under KVM works fine (tested
with 1GB ram).
Only a few days ago I found similar problems also on DELL machines...
Happy new year

s/is/isn't/ I assume.

I was referring to the "regression" thing only, i.e. there is no any
regression here, AFAIK at least.

There is a regression for the ov519 driver on ixp4xx.

There were some last-minute fixes related to i915 added to the Linus' tree
after 2.6.37-rc8. Perhaps you can give them a try?

if this is in any way related to various systems booting to a black
screen (as i described earlier), i built an absolutely up-to-date
kernel from the latest tree and that didn't solve the problem. i'm
open to testing suggestions.

Nope... machine is booting fine, screen is Ok, and in fact the machine
seems to be working perfectly... The only point is that I never saw these
in any kernel prior to 2.6.37-rc1, and them being labelled as "ERROR" made
me write a report.

Anyway, if some can tell me how to get this linus'tree, I'm ready to give
it a try Sunday afternoon.

Best,

OK, currently running :
[root@tux ~]# uname -a
Linux tux.DEF.witbe.net 2.6.37-rc8-00014-g3643e0e #1 SMP Sun Jan 2 16:25:04 CET 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and I've seen that too :
Jan 3 08:27:30 tux kernel: [drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer
Jan 3 08:27:30 tux kernel: [drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer
Jan 3 08:27:30 tux kernel: [drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer
Jan 3 08:27:30 tux kernel: [drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer

So, two possibilities :
- 2.6.37-rc8-00014-g3643e0e is not what you wanted me to test,
- the problem's still there.

Best,
Paul

I think it's still there. Thanks for testing!

Hi Rafael.
I've found the same bug reported in redhat
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=668088).
