I have bought an Opteron system with the following,
Tyan Thunder K8W Motherboard
2 x AMD Opteron 242
4 x 1Gb DIMM DDR 333MHz Reg ECC
2 x MAXTOR DIAMONDMAX PLUS-9 ATA/133 Disks
A Simple PCI Grafic Card
I have intstalled Sarge, with 2.4.22-1-386 kernel today.
I would like to try to install a 64 bit Kernel and a 32/64 chroot
environment.
Is this an updated way to do it ?
https://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/1314/21/debian-amd64-howto.html
Should a I use the 2.6.0 kernel ?
And get things from
http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/

Yes. But there is a bug in 2.6.0-test11 leading to FS corruption iirc
with a patch for it. If you use 2.6 look out for that.

What kind of patches exactly are needed for 2.6.0?
We have here dual Opteron running 64-bit 2.6.0 kernel
no crashes so far, but should we expect one?
Btw, I am trying to apply instructions in
https://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/1314/21/debian-amd64-howto.html#id2883524
but
cdebootstrap -a amd64 sarge /chroot/sarge-amd64 http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/
dies with a message
...
P: Configuring package sysvinit
P: Configuring package bash
P: Configuring package modutils
E: Couldn't install root!
Any ideas?
The system has been set up following the instructions in the same
document. The 64-bit kernel is built without modules support.
Thanks,
Pearu

Yes. You should apply the patch from
ftp://ftp.x86-64.org/pub/linux/v2.6/x86_64-2.6.0-1.bz2
