Hi

One of the open tasks[1] is to document the use of copyright-format
1.0 in our group policy. Attached is a first proposed version which we
can vote on to have it added to the policy.

Suggestions? Improvements? Changes? Discussion needed? :-)

Shall we add "... or newer", in order to allow ourselves to start
using a potential future 1.1 or 2.0 copyright format before we manage
to change our policy?

Cheers,

How about:

----cut---------cut---------cut---------cut---------cut---------cut-----
=head1 debian/copyright handling

Each package should have the copyright file F<debian/copyright> following the
copyright-format 1.0 or newer. copyright-format 1.0 as released together with
Debian policy 3.9.3 is documented at
L<http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/>.

Respectively copyright-format X.Y can be found under
L<http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/X.Y/>.
----cut---------cut---------cut---------cut---------cut---------cut-----

?

Or "the current version of Copyright-Format"?
Too bad there is either no unversioned URL or I don't find it. I'm
sure it was discussed ...
(If someone reminds me we could ask taffit later.)

Sounds fine if there is no generic URL.
Or the ugly directory listing at
http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/

Salvatore and me alked to Taffit later.
The state is that there is no generic URL, because there didn't seem
to be a good solution both technically and "logically".
He said we cold ask for a symlink latest->1.0 or similar through the
policy and www teams, but I don't think it's worth the hassle.

So I'm fine with either ...

The benefit for us would be small IMHO,
so if it had been easy for them, that would have been worth it,
but given it seems like it's not easy at all,
I suggest we forget about it -- they probably have, on their plate,
stuff that would be more useful for the project as a whole.

Hello everybody,

http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/ is a valid URL,
but would not be a valid value for the Format field. I think that the best
place for an unversionned URL that points at the specification without being
mistaken for a Format URL would be an entry in http://www.debian.org/doc/devel-manuals.

Have a nice day,

We (Gregor and I) talked during DebCamp with David Prévot if there is
a easy way from www team to have a URL pointing to the latest
copyright-format released. What we want to say is simply that in the
Debian Perl Group every package *should* follow latest released
copyright-format.

Salvatore

Hi Salvatore.

How about http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-docs.html#s-copyrightformat ?

Since the Policy and the specification for the machine-readable format are
released in the same binary package, it is very likely that this URL will
always lead to the latest version of the specification.

Thanks for your feedback and opinion. I would say, if there are no
objections within 1 week I will commit the new wording for this?
