Trying to get a working copy of Inkscape 0.48.4 without getting too
deep into library hell. Does Wheezy have this version? Alternatively
will a version intended for Ubuntu also work on Debian? Squeeze only
has 0.47.

I am a Debian novice, but a Linux user since about 1996.

What Andrey is trying to say here is that inkscape 0.48 is available if you
are running Debian 7.0 (Wheezy) and it is not available if you are running
Debian 6.0 (Squeeze). You shouldn't attempt to install packages from wheezy
on a squeeze system... that will lead to tears.

Upgrading to wheezy is relatively straight forward and is documented in the
release notes for wheezy (which aren't completely written but will be by the
weekend...)

cheers
