Considering that apparently still sufficient people are stupid enough to
fall for this kind of scam, thus keeping it attractive for spammers and
their likes, I'm not quite as amused as you seem to be.

As a general rule I agree with you, but given that this instance landed
in this mailing list - populated by generally well informed individuals
- I felt it safe to let my guard down a little.

Cheers,

Hehe,

Firstly for any actual bites I think these spammers might be scratching their heads as to exactly what the keys they have just been given actually open, lol.

Secondly, I wonder if reverse tack ticks could work here, what would spammers do if they got 10 000 fake replies to every spam they sent out?

Cheers
Gavin

On one hand you have the automated spammers, but otoh, you have the ones that hire hundreds of cheap labor (for pennies a day) to beat the captcha, e.g. forum and blog comment spammers. If its the latter, confusion. If its the former, they may or may not have the bodies to throw at the problem. In either case, hopefully they find it unprofitable.

I'm too much of a realist, what probably happens is that that particular operation drops this address from their list.

I seriously doubt that.

Run a script to validate them and discard everything that doesn't?

I suggest we don't. It's not helping with the problem.

I don't know, handling spam could be considered part of firewall setup?
So we are discussing ways of dealing with it, with perhaps a touch of humour to ease the suffering.
